The cheerful, festive and voracious caterpillar has put in his appearance in the cotton fields of Mr. Rooert Burton, near town. He is an unw-Icome guest but he walks in and goes to eating all the same. The city council passed an audience Monday night prohibiting yearling calves from running at large on the streets. The Marshal has been ordered to take up and empound all cattle, except sucking calves, when found on the streets. Mr Frank, Hudson began work Mon day on the new residence of Mr Harry L. Lendsay. The plan is L. shaped with six rooms, piazas front and rear side, closets hall etc. When completed it will be quite a creditable addition to oui litle city. Johnson Hobbs, who was killed last Sunday at St. cloud in ’ Lake county Florida, bv a negro, was for a long time a resident of Schley county and his many friends and relatives still residing here learn with deep regret the news of his untimely death. Mr. Frederick Stewart, who returned recently from Texas, broken in health, died last Thursday, at the residence of his father, Mr. Bennett Stewart, in this county. The deceased was about thirty years of age and unmarried. He leaves a host of friends and relatives in this county. This is a funny old world and hope is the biggest thing in it. Just think of four old bachelors and a widower, all wreathed in smiles and bouyed up with bright anticipations of the arrival soon, of just one little brighteyed maid. Four, at least, are sure to bo left, but hope keeps them all happy. The administrators sale of real estate was slimly attended Tuesday, owing, we presume, to the dull season of the year and cash terms of the sale. Mr. E, J. Hart bid in the plantation of the late Mrs. Mary L. Hart at, one thousand eight hundred and one dollars. The property is cheap at that price. Unless the people go to canning and drying the peaches and a pies there will j be hundreds of dollars worth of most ex cellent fruit go to waste in this county, There is nothing more palitable or healthy than dried fruit and much of the present crop could be saved in that way by a little effort. Economy is wealth, and the best way | in the world to economise, is to buy your groceries where you can get them cheapest. J. B. W illiamson makes a spcsalty of staple and fancy groceries and will not be under-sold by anyone. Read his big ad on onr first page aud call on him. The attention of the people of Schley county is called to the card of Roilin Jefferson of Columbus, on our 8th page. He invites you to call in and see him * wlien in th e city, and guarantees to sell you the best grades of finer, fish, tobac co pluntation supplies, at bottom prices. He cl , ll8specia l attention of ginners, to a cotton cleaner which will a l l from one to two cents on each pound iu value. Scott Askew, the festive little darkey who. without the fear of God before him | and in violation of the law in such cases provided and with malice aforethought, did maliciously and feloniously monkey with his neighbors chickens and water melons, and depart this bailcaiok and was brought back last week by marshal Myers, in letters; has oeen released un der bond of fjiJo. Blanchard Humber – Co one of the largest warehouse and commission firms of Columbus, appreciates the value and imponaiH-e of Schley county's patronage and conies out in a flaming advertisment on our eighth page soliciting it. They offer liberal advances on consignments, if it is desired, and sell bugging and ties at lowest prices., Mr. Ab. One of our merchants threw a water melon rind out, and struck three corn mercial drummers three others came up to brush off the spatters, and thm , mqre ru q ie d around town to get in their Wurk V vhile these were detained; the town is alive with'em; the stre« ts is lull of ’em: the woods is full of em, they are anywhere, everywhere, all over t lie county. Schley is beleaguered, beseig ed. litterallv over-run with knights ot the Grip; but it shows that Schley is a prosperous county and her trade is con sideved woith struggling ;fov. Bees never buzz tD’ovnd a lioii'. v ess fiouet. loi do uvunamib mum a moiie' ufcs to" u. innocence Abroad One of the excursionist from the ru ral districts of Schley chanced to stop while in Birmingham, at a hotel lighted by electricity. Getting ready to retire he stepped to the incondescent burner that lighted it his room and gave it a blow; but didn't go out. Straightening himself he gave a stronger blow, still the light didn.t extinguish. Eyeing the thing suspiciously, and swelling himself up like a toad, filling his lungs to their ut most capacity, our rural friend gave an other long, desperate, determined blow and thinking that such a cyclone as he had raised would almost blow out the lamp of life it self be jumped in bed but the little bit of crooked wire blazed and dazzled on just as before. “Well, 1,11 be dolswoshed,” exclaimed our surprised country cousin, “Porter! porter! come and blow out this lamp, I’ll be doggone if lean do it, and I believe the dasted thing is fixin to explode! ” The Alliance men of Schley county wil find iu the advertisement of Carter – Bradly cotton factors and commission merchants of Columbus a sentiment that touches a responsive chord in the heart of every true friend to the South ern cotton planter. This enterprising firm, to aid the farmers in their fight against trusts and combines, make a spe cialty of bagging made of cotton. Mr. Charles II. Allen still represents them on the streets of Columbus, and will be pleas ed to meet his old friends and make new ones when they visit that city. R<ad ad. on eighth page. It strikes us that the ordinance passed by the city council Monday night, im poses arduous and dificult duties upon our worthy and efficient city marshal. He seems to be an officer who is ever ready to respond to the call of duty, and if necessary, fight, bleed and die for the upbuilding of the majesty of the law; but “Yearling,” is a very indefinite term, and just imagine our gallant and digni fied defender of the peace, rushing around, pell mell, catching half grown cows, throwing them flat of their backs, opening their mouths and examining their upper front teeth to determine if they are sucking calves or “yearlings.” An old campaign fued between two prominent citizens came near resulting seriously last Monday As a reconcilia tion seems improbable it is hoped by the numerous friends of the two gentlemen that the matter will be dropped and nev er talked of again. No possible good can come from a discussion of it, and much unpleasantness and many heart-aches may be avoided l>y ignoring it altogether in the future. m ■ il 0 I A r l’3 •t ■'M pa ,5 COPIES GET UP A CLUB.
