SCHLEY COUNTY NEWS.
School opened Monday under flatter
ing auspices.
Scuppernongs are plentiful and lus
cious enough for the gods.
There will be quite a number of board
ing pupils in school this fall.
Rev W, J. Flandeis is conducting
a
meeting at Andrew Chapel this week.
We advise the farmers not to be in
too great a hurry to dispose of their cot
ton seed.
Hon. L, F. Livingston will deliver an
address in Ellaville Oct 10th. We will
make further mention later.
We learn that Drs. Cheney – Harp
have formed a co partnership and will
put up a large drug store.
Mr. Rowland has moved his stock, of
goods to the store on cotton avenue, va
cated by Mr. G. M. Green.
lrrepressable Sam W. is trying to de
cide whether he will be a “knight of the
grip, a follower of blackstone or a deci
ple of ALsculapias.
We are glad to learn that Capt. C. L.
Peocock will soon move back to Ella
ville fully convinced that there is no
place as good as his old home.
Marshal Myers continues to improve
the looks of the town by cleaning of and
extending the side walks making every
thing “as neat as a new pin.”
City marshal, Myers brought in a
whopping big fox last Saturday. It was
caught by Tip Barnes dog. this makes
their 24th, this season.
We are sorry to hear that Mr. Devane’s
hogs are dying of cholera. If this dis
ease should spread over the county it
will be quite a calamity to our farmers.
Some of our farmers complain of chol
era among their hogs; others say it is
not cholera but worms caused by eat
ing cotton seed and in others by eating
china berries last winter.
Mr. B. Williams was elected assistant
State lecturer at the recent Alliance
convention held in Macon. This is a
deserved compliment to one of our most
energetic and progressive young farmers.
One of our young merchants who is
anxious to gain favor with the farmers
is thinking seriously of having a suit
made of cotton bagging in which to
wrap himself
So many families will move here this
fall t’will necessitate the building of a
good many dwellings as all in town aie
occupied and notone of our citizens is
willing to move away to make room for
others.
The young people spent Tuesday eve
very pleasantly at the hospitable home
of Col. W. H. McCrory where in converse
sweet, to the strains of inspiring music
the hours flew by unheeded.
Cooper – Howard of the farmer’s Alli
a nee store of Columbus, solicits tbe
trade of Schley county in a neat little
advertisement on our eighth page.
Give them a call when you go to Colum
bus.
Carter – Bradley of Columbus have
bought out the whole-sale grocery es
tablishment of Join s Bros. – Caverly
and will conduct this business in con
riection with their cotton commission
business. See the change in their ad.
Mr. A. Allen brought a stalk of cotton
to the city on Tuesday last measuring
seven feat and six inches in circumfer
er.ee taking in the limbs. This freak
strange to say lias about three bolls of
cotton on it. Mr. Allen says it is the
peerless variety.
U*W(> have formed a club with tlie
Macon Weekly Telegraph, one of tbe
very best metropolitan weeklies in the
South and will send both, the SCHLEY
County News and the Telegraph to any
adddress for only $1,80 a year.

tion requiring all persons who have en

THE ALLIANCE POET.
Macon Telegraph.
The Alliance at Macon have a poet.
One of them is guilty of this:
Mary had a little lamb.
It’s name was little Jute.
A foreign nation was its datn
And it was awful eute.
One year she carried prices high
By making quite a corner.
She put both thumbs into a pie
Like little Jaeky Horner
It made the combine laugh and shout
To see the farmers kick,
For never was there such a rout—
It was both short and quick.
But when the farmer turned Jute out
There was a woefu. bleat;
A little cotton bagging ram
Butt Juty otr its feet.
The trust, said little wooly Jute,
To be my friend was said;
Alas, for me, there’s no dispute
The trust has killed me dead,
ALLIANCE MEETING
There will be a meeting of the comity
Alliance on Tuesday the 10th. day of
September at the court house in Ellaville
10 o’cloak a. m.
Robert Patten. Pres. County Alliance
NO FENCE
The no fence law for the 96th District
G. M. will go into effect on the 1st of
next January, tiie bill for the 785th Dis
trict is still pushing in the Sen ite the
bill for the 946tli District has been with
drawn so we are informed. This is a
new departure it remains to be seen
whether it will prove .benefiicial or not
As it is now a law for this the Ellaville
District it behooves every farmer to
make dire preparation therefor.
“They say” that a certain widower
who has been summering in the moun
tains of North Ga. ‘ and at Indian Springs
has since his return to Ellaville been con
stantly singing “Only to see you Dar
ling.”Mr. Allen, who does nt appreci
ate this “concord of sweet sound”
threatens to take out a peace warrant un
less the gentleman ceases to display his
voitl ibilities.
Columbus, Aug. 31.—[Special]—A
prominent farmer of Schley county was
in the city yesterday afternoon, making
some purchases of supplies anti drv
goods. While in one of the stores on
Broad street, a sneak thief stole his silk
umbrella and the material for a lady’s
dress from the wagon. The thief is un
known, The fanner returned home
without investing in any more dress
goods.
DONT LAUGH,
Jackson News.
Do not laugh at the drunken man
reeling through the streets, however lu
dierous the sight may be. He is going
home to some tender heart that will
^r vo 1 j with intense a ;ony, some mother
perhaps, who will grieve over the down
f a j| 0 f | K , r ouce sinless l oy; or it may
be a loving wife whose heart will al
most burst with grief as she view’s the
destruction of her idol, or it may be a
loving sister, who wil shed bitter tears
over the degradation of her brother,
shorn of his manliness and self respect,
Rather drop a tear of sympathy with
those hearts so keenly sensitive and ten
der, yet so proudly royal that they can
not accept sympathy tendered them ei
ther in word, look or action .although it
might fall upon their wounded and !
crushed hearts as the summei dew upon
the withering plant.
A difficulty occurred at a negro church
on Cedar creek Sunday night the par- !
tieulars as near as we can get them is as
follows;
Jim Cottle alias Walker and Gus j
Denson both young bucks highly color
ed had an engagement to see one of the
young dam-sels home and each insisted
on the right to accompany her. Words
highly sulphurious were used when
Denson drew a pistol and fired three
times in quick succession at his rival.
The first shot missed, but the second
went through the left ami of Cottle and
the third shot entered his right wrist and
lodged there, the hall was cut out by Dr.
Murray. Denson left for pastures green
er and Cottle is nursing his wounds. A
warrent has been issued for Denson but
so far he has not been captured.

The cotton market here is good as :
Amerieus or Columbus less freight, one
of our young planters went through El

Amerieus. Mr. Suber looked at his cot
ton and offeied him lOjcts. for it which
was refused. He hauled it to Amerieus
and could only get lOJots. offered and
fiinally sold it at that price. This actu
ally’occurred cotton is rolling in from all
directions. The receipts at the ware
house for August were 108. Last year
year the receipts were thirty showing
that our farmers had rather seR here if
good prices are paid. Every famwr can
