ELLAVILLE HIGH SCHOOL.
Dear Editor:
Through the medium of
your valuable paper I wish to call the
attention of the patrons of the Ellaville
High School to its claims upon their gen
erosity.
The question as to what interest every
man should feel in having a good school
in his own vicinity, his own town needs
no argument, for every parent who has
the interest of his children at heart
knows that the best equipment that can
be given them to enable them to cope
successfully with the world is an educa
tion.
The man who is not alive to this press
ing demand upon "him and allows
his children to grow up in ignorance
when lie is able to send them to school
is recreant to I lie trust committee to him
as a father. But I know of no such pa
rents in nor around Ellaville and hence
it is not necessary to argue the question.
There is another requisite however, no
less imperative, and that is a house in
which the children may be comfortable,
much to the discredit of Ellaville the
academy is far from being such a build
ing. Repairs are needed, and needed,
badly. Whose business is it to make
such repairs? Every patron of the
school, and every citizen of the town.
A live, ^flourishing school in here will
more to increase I lie population and thus
or ' <j„ n i se business of every charactt r
-
than any enterprise practicable.
Hence every man in the town and vi
cinity should feel a personal interest in
converl ing the present home school house
into tin Academy that is in keeping
with the enterprising spirit and taste
which now characterize our town. The
trustees are willing to do their part, but
ought not to he expected to do it all.
The work must he done during the two
weeks vacation and hence immediate ac
tion must lie taken, Our town cannot
be excelled anywhere as a site for a
flourishing schc ol. A town that has tu>
whiskey-shop no disipated young men,
no had hoys in it, is hard to find; On
the contrary, the society is not to lie ex
celled in any town of quadruple inhabi
tants. Parents wishing to board their
their sons and daughters away from
home at school need have no fear that
their morals would be corrupted here,
while there is not a more healthful sec
tion in South-west Georgia. We have
all these natural and social advantages,
yet we have too much pride to solicit
the patronage of non-resident parents so
long as we do not prepare a comfortable
house for their children.
We need ¥250 dollars' and if every man
would do bis part the amount could be
raised and the change scarcely missed.
Dr. C. II. Smith Pres, Board of Trust—
ues will call a meeting of all parties in
terested either directly or indirectly.
The pride that Ellaville and vicinity
have, or ought to have, shculd of itself
cause every man that can possibly do so,
to he present to sec that Ellaville has an
Aca-Jemy that will be a credit rather
than a disgrace to the enterprising pub
lic spirited men within her borders.
Respectfully,
S. J. (’ole
