TO MY SON EDGAR.
Just twenty } ears ago a doting young
mother poured out the depths of a true
mother's heart in the following touching
lines addressed to her darling babe, her
first born, then just one year-old.
Placing the slip of paper in a book she
laid it away and it was forgotten.
Twenty years rolled by, the fond mother
was called to that home beyond the sky,
and tiie babe to whom the lines were
addressed grew to be a man. This week
Yvhile rummaging over some old books
and papers he came across the slip of
paper for the first time, his father, Dr.
J. N. Cheney of this city, remembered
the circumstances and explain ed.
Forget me not, in accents mild,
Y'our mother says, beloved child,'
Forget mo me not, when faraway.
Amidst a thoughtless world you stray.
Forget me not, when fools would win
Your footsteps to the path of sin.
Forget me not, when urged to wrong
Bv passions and temptations strong.
Forget me not, when pleasure’s snare
Would lead you from die house of prayar.
Forget me not in feeble age,
But let me then your t houghts engage
And thiuk my child how fondly I
watched over your helpless infancy.
Forget me not, when death shall close
The eyelids in their last repose
And evening breezes softly wave
The grass upon thy mothers grave.
Oh then! what e’er thy uge and lot
May be my child forget me not!.
Your Mother.
