AFTER TWENTY EIGHT YEAR.
' Mr. C. F. Foster, yesterday recieved
from his relative in Spaulding county, a
letter containing information of the dis
interment of his brother’s remains, w hich
had been buried in the Gilder family
burying ground, near Mount Zion, twen
ty-eight years ago.
The dead man was about nineteen
years of age, and in the early days of the
war marched to the front with the
“Spalding Grays.” Shortly afterwards
he had an attack of the measles. As a.
punishment, for some “old soldier’s fun,”
the commanding officer required several
of the men. to carry a heavy log around
the camp fire in the rain. Foster was
among the number, and from exposure
and over-exertion, had a relapse of the
measles and died.
His remains were embalmed and sent
home in a metallic coffin, where they
were interred. A rumor was along time
in circulation that the dead soldier's re
mains had teen stolen. No investigation
of the rumor was made, however, until
last-week, when several of the ladies of
the family resolved to ascertain the
truth about the long • alked-of-grave
robbery.
The grave was opened and the old me
tallic coffin, after a sleep of twenty-eight
years, was once more brought to light.
The wooden boxing had long 'since de
cayed, but the coffin was well preserved.
Expecting to find, if anything, a few un
sightly bones, the dust was brushed off
the giass front and the ladies looked hi.
They found their brother's corpse as
well preserved, apparently, as the uay
"n which it was buried. The clothes
were spotless, and the features were per
fect. Roventlv the coffin lid was raised
•and a lock of hail* was taken, as a m#
mento of the halveon days of childhood,
then the body was again covered a d left
to await the resurection.—Recordes.
Atlanta Journal:—A Fire was caused
in Messrs. Stoney – Gregory’s drug store
at the corner of Peachtree and Decatur
streets by a strange accident, about 12
o’clock yesterday. A cat in running
about the store overturned ThoetWr««.<,£««, a demijohn
the floor and the gas arising trom it was
ignited by a gas jet burning a short dis
tance away. This blazed up and for a
while it looked as if there was about to
b • a dangerous fire. The department re
sponded promptly to the alarm, and in
a short while the blaze was out. Thu
damage amounted to about £30.
