An object of charity never appeals in J
vain to the good people of Eliaville.
There i ; a disposition on the part of
some people, to look out for numtwr one
ouly.
A lady in Eliaville has fallen heir to
some property left by a wealthy uncle
in Louisanna.
A week of sunshine has put (he
#rs in better spirits and they have gone
to work with a will.
We are glad to learn tnat Mr H C Ar
ringtoa and Miss Alice, have recovered
fix*in their recent illness.
One of our most prosperous business
firms will probably erect a handsome
store bouse during the summer.
What congress is doing does not con
cern Eliaville half so much as getting
the town cleaned up before summer.
The merchants are preparing for the
Spring trade. Watch the columns of
your home paper if you want bargains.
It really Seems that the law against
vagrancy might be a little more rigidly
enforced. Too many idle brains is not
good for a community.
We learn that teachers who failed to
pet licences will be allowed to continue
(hen schools, by special arrangement
made by the board of education.
The King’s Daughters are espec.ally

There was no service at either of the

ill to till his appointment, Ihe fcabbalb
school at the Baptist church in the after
noon was well attended and vei T
interesting.
It is well enough to be on the lookout
for mad dogs as you perambulate the
streets. We learn that there are several
in this community, and they are more
to be dreaded than a roaring lion.
Our streets are not well drained. In
many parts of town pools of stagnant
water stand for weeks, and unless some
thing is done to remedy the matter
before warm weather we are going to
have sickevs sure.
Kind words and bright smiles cost
nothing, and these times "they are more
to be desired than gold." See that you
dispense them lavishly to those you
ctance to meet ou life’s highway.

DEATH OF MR8 R O WELLS.
Mrs Sallie Dodson Wells after a brief
illness from an acute attack of pneumo
nia, panned into the "unknown and eter
nal" at twelve o'clock Friday night. The
announcement of her death wan a great
shock to every one, and to her family
the blow came came with heart
.’ending suddenness. No one realized
that her illness was of a serious nature.
Friday morning she suffered consider
pain but insisted that she did not
need a physician and would soon be up.
Her anxious husband however sum
moned Dr Cheney, but the skilled eyes
of the physician saw at once that his
patient was beyond all human aid. But
hoping almost against hope everything
possible was done to bring about a re
action. but the insidious disease had
done its work and she sank rapidly. It
is hard to associate Mrs Wells with
Her sunny nature, bright and
at all times, makes her loss all
“°re keenly felt in the home where
she was indeed the light. Her ministry
of love to husband and children in its
watchful tenderness was beautiful. Mrs
Wells had been a resident of Eliaville
only three years, but in the short period
she hud gathered about her many warm
friends. She was a useful member of the
Baptist church and will be greatly
missed in the sanctuary. The remains
were interred in our cemeteiy Sunday
afternoon. A large gathering of friends
stood about the open grave as the funer
al service was impressively read by
Judge C L Battle, and in a few appro
priate remarks he bore testimony to the
genuine good works of the departed.

A Romantic Marriage.
Eliaville people were treated to a gen
uine surprise Sunday afternoon in the
quiet marriage which took place at the
at the home of Mr John Kleckly. The
contracting parties were Mr Edward
Stewart and Miss Minnie LoeThreld
keld, and so well had they kept their
secret that no one knew of their inten
tions until just a few moments before
the ceremony was performed. Mr Stew
art called in the afternoon at the home
of his sweetheart and together they went
for a walk going to the home of Mrs
Kleckly, who is an aunt of the groom.
Two or three friends were notified and
Ordinary Taylor summoned. By this

number of gentlemen dropped in just in
time to witness the interesting event.
.Judge Taylor officiated in a very digni
fied and Impressive manner. It wa« not
exactly a runaway marriage, but as
there was some opposition the young

HORRORS OF HYDROPHOBIA.
The Blood Shot Eyes and Foaming
Mouth of a Mad Dog causes much
Excitement.—A little girl
Terribly Bitten.
A mad dog "seeking wnoui he might
devour’* created consternation on the
streets Friday, and did a great deal of
dammage before he was stopped in his
mad career. Three hogs on Mr Dixon's
place were bitten, and although ibe ani
mal was fired on several times he contin
ued tearing around town, attacking
everything that crossed his path. val
uable pointer doc belonging to Mr Jim
Williams was killed and a number of
chickens in Mrs Scarborough's yard
were literally torn to pieces. Mrs Tnorn
ton also lost several. Several persons on
the streets were chased around and
frightened almost out of their wits.
Bailey Clark secured a pistol and follow
ed the dog but be managed to keep out
of reach of the shots and rushed out to
Mrs Eason’s where he bit a fine cow be
longing to a colored man. Just over in
to Taylor county he savagely attacked a
little daughter of Mr Harvey, making
terrible wounds on her face and tearing
out two of her front teeth. It was only
after a fieice struggle with the brute
that the father of the child suceeded in
rescueing her from her perilous position.
A mad stone was applied to the lacerat
ed flesh and everything is being done to
prevent the development ot rabies. Mr
Steve Collins informs us that about 25
dogs in the vicinity of Murray’s X Roads
have been killed, so great is the fear of
hydrophobia. It is certain that no dog
is safe that dares to walk the streets cf
Eliaville, for the war of extermination
has begun in earnest. If you are the
owner of a valuable canine keep him
tied in the back yard UDtil the scare is
over.

Out in the Cold World.
Five motherless, and worse than father
less waifs, barefooted and thinly clad,
was a pathetic sight on the streets of EL
laville Friday, tnat appealed to every
heart in which slumbers a spark of hu
manity. The mother sleeps in her gra ver
and the inhuman father seems to have
turned the little ones adrift on the cold
charities of the world. He is a resident
of Schley comitv but has had his chil
dren working in the factory in Colum
bus, and the care of a woman, who,
from all accounts has treated them very
cruelly. Without so much as a change their
of clothing and no mouy to pay
fare they came down on the 11 o’cIock
train Thursday night and slept in an
Open cotton house near the railroad.with
no covering to shield them from the piii
less wind and rain. M<* John William
son found them crying on the streets in
the early morning and carried them to
his home, where a warm lire and good
breakfast was provided.
Mrs Cheney the president of the Kings
Daughters called a meeting of the circle
and willing hands worked until each lit
