We cheerfully curtail oui local
news this week to make room for
the articles from “J. R. K,” and
“Zip.” These articles are written
by men of experience who have
given the subject of farming a
good deal of thought, and they de¬
serve to be read with care b,y ev-
ery man in the county, We re-
gret that our limited space forced
us to trim “Zip's’ 1 article father
severely. But enough is given, if
rightly practiced, to shower down
the most benign smiles from the
goddess of Fortune.
Does Farming Bay?
n here are “many men of many
mind,” both in the agricultural
and mercantile worlds. The vari-
eties of ideas among agricultural-
ists are as multiplied as the men i
are numerous. Blit there are qUes-
tio„» upon which they should
agree and which are questiphs of
vital importance to them and to
the prosperity of the country, j
One of these questions is the im- j
portance of raising home supplies; I
another is the subject of comma-;
eial manure, and one ot the most
iup and keeping „«uA
You may ask a dozett men, tak-
ing them as you meet them, if a
condensed system of farming is
not better than the old broudeas,
system of planting and they will
tell ... you yes, VI,.,., Watch those drizeri _
men and you will find that at
least six of them do not beleire
any such a thing,- for they want td
plant the whole earth and try to
cultivate it: They will plant Jd
acres in cotton and i o in corn to
each plow, serateh over it as best
they can, gather about six bales of
cotton and fifty bushels ot corn,
come out in debt, and curse the
man who trusted them for supplies,
They have been running in these
old ruts so long they, can’t see
how they can break the chains? but
brethren, the chains must he bro-
ken tfr yiltlr wires will be paupers
and yOirf eBildren be fs srs. Ask
tho'^e men which is best, to raw*t
yodr cdfK wheat, on,., hog,, e,e. ;
of,to raise H/tton and buy them,
and they ‘ Will i-l! you to raise
rhem by all frteXns, but right m
t he face of their advice they nd.se
no oats, wheat or meat, and ex-
pec*' to mitre cotton to buy them
with. You may ask these men
how much it pays to use conmtor
cial fertilizers and they will tell
you that it does not pay at all.
Follow them for a short time and
you will see a majority of them
signing mortgage notes for guano.
VVe are not agreed upon these sub¬
jects. The man who calls hint-
self a farmer and who does not
keep a cow misses the mark fur¬
ther than anybody. No farmer
ever had a cow which gave a gal-
Ion of milk per day who did not
save money by keeping her, if he
raised the feed he gave her. The
hay that will keep a cow through a
season will not cost half what the
manure is worth that the cow will
produce, if it is well cared for and
sheltered. The man who makes
no hay and who buys guano while
his cows and horses (the best gua¬
no factories in the world) tun out
on bleak hills and suffer in winter
storms, ought to be a poor man,
and he will remain so. The same
dozen men will tell you that we
all ought to raise our horses and
mulss; that you can raise a good
animal for ten or twenty dollars
and really not fed the expense.
Yet these men do not believe
what they say, for at least half of
them, when they need an animal,
will buy either a third-class mule
or a Texas pony instead of a good
brood mare. 1 repeat it, we are
not agreed. We say one thing
anti do another. We are always
saying what vve should do add do¬
ing What we should not do. Ev¬
erything goes wrong and we are
to blame. We are only agreed
upon Ohe thing and that is the
fact that we are poor and in debt.
We need to agree upon one plan,
and that plants the same old ope
that has beett So ! long.' talked
about and never followed—the old
