Did you ever edit a newspaper?
If you didn’t there are a great
many things of which you are in
blissful ignorance, and perhaps it
is better for you that it is so.
There is more deception rind van¬

BAR ROOMS.
Mr. Editor.
Jn a recent issue of The Her¬
ald one of your correspondents
expresses regret that a barroom
has been located in Jasper. I may
or I may not personally know that
correspondent, but I have this to
say of him, 01 her, as the Case
may be: Such people justly de¬
serve the respect, confidence and
co-operation of all moral and tern
perance-loving people for having
the candor to utter a note of warn¬
ing in this day of popular liquor
traffic in Pickens county, for it is
easily understood by the most cas¬
ual observer that its baneful infiu
ence is spreading in our li’itle
mountain county which has “so
many natural resources and attrac¬
tions that invite capital, What
we mostly need is good society,
good schools, more good men and
women who will build up our coun¬
try morally, socially, and reli¬
giously, as well as financially. Will
barrobms accomplish this result?
Every reasonable person will an¬
swer, “No.”
The natural resources of our
county, referred to above, will ex^
cel any county, perhaps, in the
State; and yet what county, of the
same population, can boast of as
many saloons and distilleries? In
one militia district in this county
there are two barrooms in opera¬
tion, and two illicit distilleries have
recently been destroyed, How
many more there are I do not
know, neither do J want to know.
But one thing I do know: in this
same district there are three
chtirches arid seven preachers.
Who would have believed that vo¬
cations so widely different would
have come in such close proximity?
