There is a great deal of railroad
talk in North Georgia just now,
and we hope that some good may
come of it. The Knoxville South¬
ern is of course a fixed fact Then
then is a revival of the Augusta
and Chattanooga, the Etowah Val¬
ley, and strong talk of a road from
Tallai wiosa to Dahlonega. This
last named road is a newly pro¬
posed Me, and if btlilt would be
Otte of the best in this section.
We are glad to see this evidence
t»f development in North Georgia.
A railroad meeting was recently
helc in Dawsonville for the pur¬
pose of re-organizing the Etowah
Valley Railway COmpahy and dis-
Ctissing the ways and means of
building a road from Gainesville to
Rome, via Davvsonville. the mar¬
ble quarries of this county, and
Kingston. The following gentle¬
men were elected directors: lion.
John Palmour, R. B. McClure,
Henry Dowser, J. K. Castleberry
hud V, 1*. Monroe, with P. B.

A New Railroad
Speaking of the proposed rood
from Tallapoosa to Dahlonega the
Emerson Graphite says:
Tallapoosa could secure no out¬
let better calculated to insure the
bench's of varied competition, for
the road would cross in its north¬
east course all the rival north and
south lines in North Georgia, with
which a choice of connections
could always be had. It would
have a direct connection with the
iron ore beds of Bartow, Cherokee,
Dawson and Lumpkin counties,
securing without transfer* the
choicest ores in the South for fine
iron and steel. Tallapoosa will
become great when she becomes a
railroad center. No single line
could possibly secure her such im¬
mediate and lasting benefit as the
one proposed.
Dahlonega, if possible, is still
more interested. Should the road
from Gainesville be constructed,
which is probable, Dahlonega
would still need She competition
which this proposed road would af¬
ford, to insure reasonable rates.
It would give Lumpkin and Daw¬
son counties a nearly direct route
to the furnaces of Tennessee and
Pittsburg. Such an outlet tor
their magnetic iron ores would be
of inestimable advantace and war¬
rant the most strenuous exertions
to secure the roHd.
Emerson would be the central
town on the route. Lying in the
very midst of the fittest brown
hematite and specular ores in the
South, with beds of matiganese al
her doorsi a direct connection with
the magnetic ores of Dawson and
Lumpkin would complete the con¬
ditions Accessary to make her the
great iron and stefei center of
North Geoagiai Dallas ahd Can¬
ton need the cross route which
this road would afford, While to
Davvsonville its value would be in¬
estimable.
The ore freights alone would
probably support the rdad and pay
the interest on its bonds. In time
the road would doilbtless be ex¬
tended from Dahlonega to other
connections and become a link in
a chain which would include Mont¬
gomery in Alabam, and Asheville
in North Carolina.
