The insolent threat of the jute

these holy fellows.
A dispatch from Hiimingham to

As , mankind , . . ascends . the steps
development, , , and »
of . progressive
mounts to grander , heights , and ,
finer . conceptions, *. the . divinity ,. ■ .. of c
womanhood is realized more and
more*,
No mar cqn ever possess a full
rounded character yvhose life has
not been hallowed by rhe Ipve of
one pure, good wpnpuu.
And there is iumfc sirengthen
ing and support in a pair of those
soft white arms than tjjcfh is in
braces of iron and girders of steel.
In the daydawn of youth, when
the kindling vision sirycps the
plains of futurity and secs only
the blazonry of hopeful promises,
the young man weds sonic damsel
on whose tender cheek the dews
of morn are still a tremble' Then
come the years of toll and labor,
the cares and the worries, the
joys and the disappointments.
Man is prone to selfishness, and
is too near-sighted fo observe the
hand that bears the cooling chal-
ice to the fevered lips. Hut to the
woman he is all in all She has
not a thoughf higher than his
dear head, for that is, '.u her, as
high as heaven.
Hut every day he learns a truer
and more unconscious appreciation
pf her duvolion. On the threshold
of her home, be it palace or cot¬
tage, he expects fo see her vvtdting
to welcome him when the toils of
the day die oyer. -
There js something in hpF very
ppesence-^something soothing and
refreshing. And her voice is
dearer to him than all the melodies
of earth and sea find sky combined.
Anticipating his smallest wishes,
she teaches him to expect all that
is best in life through her tender
hands.
And a man—if he be a man—is
devoted and glorified by these pure
and holy influences, < As the years
go hy, even the fires of adversity
but weld jn closer union these two
hearts. The sunlight of prosperi¬
ty but causes each heart t<> throw
out new tendrils that become so
wreathed and intertwined as to
make of these twain hut one per¬
fect being, just as God, in Mis all¬
wise providence, intended should
be the result of wedded life.
The man who is incapable of
that pure and lofty appreciation of
worn m’s love, is incapable of ft cl¬
ing the thrill of that noble intel¬
lectuality which is but a foretaste
of joys that are to come in.a world
where the souls of these pure and
tender wives and mothers shall
shine with a luster unequalled by
the concentrated splendor of a
hundred suns.
An agricultural paper says; “Ev¬

ought occasionally to keep the
fact before its readers that burnt
corn is a sure cure for hog cholera.
The best way is to take a pile of
corn am! effectually scorch it and
give the ufLcted hogs free access
to it. Phis remedy was discovered
by K. K. Duke at the time his dis¬
tillery was burnt in Lewiston, Il¬
linois, together with a lot of stored
corn, which was so badly injured
as to be unfit for use It was
greedily eaten by the hogs, several
of which were dying daily. After
thexsecond day not a hog was
lost, and the disease entirely dis¬
appeared. The remedy has been
tried in a number of cases since
j ano has never failcd .
