Blue Ridge.
Miss Fannie Day opened her
school at Cross Roads, this county,

buried in such a place?

tage to call at this office before making
arrangements elsewhere.
S. A. King desires ail who owe
him to come up at once and settle.
Don’t wait until you arc compelled
to pay cost.
We must compliment Talking
Rock and vicinity upon having so
many pretty girls, But then all
girls arc good looking.
Very popular, very small, very good.
De Witt’s Little Early Risers, the pill for
constipation, biliousness, sick headache
Dr. W. A. Richards
Everybody enjoyed the. dinner,
speaking, the music, the march, the
lemonade, the ice cream and the
pretty girls.
The boys have a thrashing laid up
for Col. Tate because, in his address
last Saturray, he referred to their
looks.
A cotton bloom was handed us
on the 4th. That is pretty early
for this section. The bloom was
found in Mr. F. M. Heath’s cotton.

Mrs. Miliican visited Atlanta last
■week to see Dr. Ca’houn m regard to
her partial deafness, Wo learn that
she is improving.
Mrs. Lula Grant has taken charge
of tbe school at Refuge. She moved
last Saturday.
Prof. Millican’s school opened last
Monday with a very large attendance.
Miss Annie Hawkins, of Birming¬
ham, Ala., lias been visiting Miss
Rora McIIan, of this place, for sev¬
eral days.
Mrs. Peeples and son, of Fair-
mount, spent part of last week and
this with the family of Mr. A. W.
McHan, of this place.
Work is progressing on the new
trestle above town. A large force of
hands is at work.
Revival Meeting. Rev. W. D.
Shea is conducting a revival meeting
of great interest this week at Marble
Hill.
The grand celebration is over and
everybody is more patriotic and in a
good humor. Nothing like breaking
bread with one another.
CJjTlf “a thing that’s already down
cant be downed,” then the forecloa-
ure of a twelve-hundred-dollar mort¬
gage need not be a cause for worry.
See the punctum?
Tlic cows all refused to give down
their milk while the brass
band was in town. If the boys had
remained here a week the town
would have been without milk.
Miss Emma McIIan left Tuesday
week for Dalton to attend the
Normal Session of the Dalton Con¬
servatory of Music which opened on
the 8th to continue twenty days.
Mrs. J. R. Allen, Wilson, N. C.,
says: When I feel the slightest ten¬
dency to Headache, I immediately
take a dose of IJradyerotine, and in
a very short tune am entirely re¬
lieved.
When Shakespeare wants to have
a joke printed on the Herald editor
he ought to send it to this office. If
there is any fun on hand we always
want to help enjoy it, and we never
see the Calhoun Times.
S. A. King wishes the people to
remember that lie keeps on hand, in
bis saloon at Talking Rock, a fine se¬
lection of whisky, brandy and beer.
Try his goods and see if they are
not of the best quality. 3G-4t.

Mrs. W. H. Beckwith, accompa¬
nied by her mother, Mrs. Reynolds,
and her sister, Mrs. Bryant, all of
Tampa, Fla., arrived at this place
last Wednesday week and will
spend a month two or three months.
They are occupying the McClain
brick dwelling.
A subscription will soon be started
for the purpose of getting up a brass
band at this place. The town needs
a band and wu believe the people
will give the necessary encourage¬
ment to secure it. There is plenty
of talent here to make a fine band if
wo had the instruments.
The young man aforementioned
asks another report on the condition
of the Ellijay boom. We had it on
the 4th from a reliable source that
the boom had been dead so long that
the hair is beginning to slip. Ben
Akens has just finished the coffin and
we are requested to announce that
Rev. Ben S. Holden will conduct
the burial exercises.
One young man at Sunday school
last Sunday read the advertisement
of Pyle’s Pearline, on the back of
the senior quarterly, when the re¬
sponsive reading was called for.
The young man’s spectacles affected
his eyesight and be never knew what
he was reading until the lesson was
finished.
Prof. Smith wick sang at this place
on last Saturday night and again
Sunday morning. He is a splendid
teacher and it is proposed by some
that a class be made it this place for
him. We believe this is a good
idea because something is needed to
create a greater interest for music
among our people.
The city papers are all right if you
want them, but it is the local paper
that advertises your business, your
schools, your churches, your numer¬
ous societies, sympathizes with you
in your affliction and rejoices in your
prosperity. In short, it is your lo¬
cal paper that mentions the thousand
a nd one items m which you arc in¬
terested during the year, and which
you do not find in the city papers.
COLIMA,
It seems to be a source of great
pleasure to a couple of young men to
cross the mountains once in a while.
They say that Col. Will Watts
has quit the practice of law and is
now pulling the hell cord over a
mule. No doubt the latter is much
more becoming to the Colonel’s
mental capacity.
Miss Ada Findley, of Fairmount,
commenced her school at this place
on the 6th inst., and as yet has not
been molested by snakes. Indeed
Shakespeare, of Fairmount, was on
our streets recently, and if our effi¬
cient teacher did not get frightened
at him we rather think she will make
it all right with the less hideous
snakes. Harry of Colima.
A (.’RAM) TIME.
The celebration hero on the 4th
was one of the biggest things ever
seen in this section.
Early in the morning the people
began to arrive, and at 9 o’clock
when the Odd Fellows from Nelsot,
Marble Ilill and Mountain City
Lodges met at the courthouse, tin
crowd had become immense. There
\\ “re also bright representatives from
tho Lodges at Ball Ground and Wa-
lesca, besides the whole lodges above
mentioned, among the most noted
being District Deputy Grand Master
Holbrook and Past Grand McClure,
of the Ball Ground Lodge; also
Grand Master Anderson, of Atlanta.
At 10 o’clock the Odd Fellows
left the courthouse and, accompanied
by the Dawsouville Band, marched
in fine style to the grove at the Meth¬
odist church where an appropriate
and highly appreciated welcome was
extended to them, and to the visitors,
by lion. F. C. Tate, mayor of Jasper.
A well timed reply was made, m be¬
half of the multitude by Rev. W. D.
Shea, of Mountain City
Grand Master Anderson was the
speaker of the day, and efficiently
did he handle his subject, a synopsis
of the origin, growth and work of
Odd Fellowship in America. Past
Grand McClure delivered one of the
neatest, most eloquent and feeling
addresses of the day, though Bros.
Henley, Cagle and Pattillo made
splendid addresses.
The table was arranged in the
form of a square, Odd Fellows on
the inside and their relatives and vis¬
itors on the outside. The crowd
was orderly and well behaved.
Plenty to feed all was spread upon
the table, and everybody fared well.
After dinner the people returned to
the speakers’ stand where they were
entertained with music and speeches
for a couple of hours or more. Then
the Odd Fellows wore inarched
again to the courthouse.
When the Odd Fellows and citi¬
zens of this section join hearts and
hands, pocketbooks and baskets,
with the people of Jasper to have a
celebration and a good dinner ’ you
may rest assured that there will be
something nice to eat and a large,
good natured crowd to enjoy it.
This is what we wished fdr and
what we had. The people of this
section are proverbial for their liber¬
ality and ability to entertain, The
women are good cooks and tbe men
are willing to carry water and foot
the ration bills.
It is estimated that anywhere from
1500 to 2000 people were on hand.
A Card of Thanks.
In behalf of the members of Nel¬
son, Marble Hill and Mountain City
Lodges I. O. (). F. we desire to re-
turn our hearty thanks to Judge
James A. Anderson, Grand Master
of the Independent Order of Odd
Fellows for the State of Georgia, for
hrs presence at our celebration on
the 4th inst., and for his willingness
to aid us and explain the sacred prin¬
ciples of Odd Fellowship. May the
principles which he inculcates
to bim the peace that flows like
limpid stream from tbe
of Truth.
To the clever boys of the Dawson-
ville Band we return thanks for the
cheering music which they furnished
for our people during the exercises
of the day.
Wc are also grateful to the Odd
Fellows from other Lodges and to
the people of this section for their
valuable assistance in making the
celebration a success.

Those of the visitors here last Sat¬
urday who had not seen the town
before all spoke in high praise of our
town and the surrounding country.
Judge Anderson, of Atlanta, was
very much pleased with his visit.
He said ihat to come here from At-

summer heat to spring or autumn
weather with its pleasant breezes,
Certainly we have a grand climate.

tne folowing Resalutions:

tist church of Christ at Talking
Rock, forbid any one from preach¬
ing in our church who is considered
in disorder by our association.
2nd, That we approbate a sound
ministry and welcome any minister

we are in fellowship, to preach in

Fairmount
The singing at Shiloh last Sunday
was largely attended by Fairmount
young folks, and Prof. Bowen great¬
ly assisted Profs. Swann and Pitman
in conducting the services.
Miss Jennie Byrd’s croquet party
was' greatly enjoyed hy everyone
iresent.
Judge James Durr carried his best
girl home the other night, and be¬
came so enthusiastic on his way
home that he broke his buggy all
to smithereens.
Mr. Sim Watts loves Ilarry so
well that he carries a bee in his hip
rocket.
Mr. John Erwin is down with a
pain in his left side where a girl
kicked him. We think from this
and some more personal experience
that some of our girls are pretty
mulish.
Profs. Smithwick and Arwood
will begin their singing school at
this place soon.
Harry’s snake got loose from him
the other day and bit his favorite
dog but he re-captured it before any
further harm was done, and it now
occupies its accustomed place.
