Hon. Roger Q. Mills was elected
to the U. S. Senate by the Texas
Legislature last Tuesday.
The World’s Fair talk seems to
be dying down Georgia should Not
be behind every other State in the
Union.
Judge Marshall C'arke has deci.
dedthi.t advertisements appearing
in newspapers printed on Sunday
cannot be collected. This will

ci
off ( on the gubernaiionaf chair.
He cx its to gee there by the aid
of the 'I iiird party.
Editor Horace Ellington, of the
If Hi jay Courier, tiled of single life-
last Sunday was happily united in
marriage to Miss Alema Buffington
of Ellijay. May their married life
be one of napp n :ss and prosperity.
Dawson, Forsyth and Cherokee
counties all have a surplus in the
county treasury. It will be some¬
time before Pickens can boast of
this.
When times are hard there is one
class that do not suffer but make
more money than at any other time
This class are the lawyers. They
have more collecting, more suing
and their practice increases as the
as the times get harder. Arc the
lawyers thankful for hard times?
As far as we know there is not
a straight out Third party man in
the good old county of Pickens.
We have not inquired.' it is true,
any man whether or not he was in
favor of the Third party. We be¬
lieve the people of this county will
stick to their old parties. As it
now stands the two old parties
control about an equal number of
votes and all seem to stand firm to
their respective parties. It will he
hard for us to believe that Pickens
Democrats and Republicans will
ever desert the ranks for Third
Partyism.
From flic Constitution
Col. Tom Winn, of Georgia, dc
livered his maiden speech as a con¬
gressman to night. It was in favor
of the Bland free coinage bill. He
spoke thirty minutes and was listen
ed to by a crowded house and gal
leries. Colonel Winn surprised
even his friends in his manner of
delivery. He is an orator of no
mean ability. His speech was well
prepared and his argument convinc
ing. He has devoted much study
to the silver question, and demon¬
strated that the depressed condi
tion of the farmer was attributed to
the congested circulating medium.
He believed that the free coinage
of silver would add from twenty^
five to thirty million of currency
more than is b ing added under the
present law to the circulating me¬
dium of the country, and would
tend largely to remedy the present
evils of our system ol finance.
Some of the people and papers
ol the Democratic party in the
State seem to ignore the People’s
Party. But it begins to look like
the State will poll more Third party
votes than expected. A few weeks
ago the editor of the Southern
Alliance Farmer asked the sub-
alliances of the State to endorse
or repudiate the St. Louis platfoim
adopted b> the T, nd part).
of 2,200 alliances in the state i,6co
have adopted resolutions, and all
but three have endorsed the St.
Louis platform The party will, we
predict, hereafter have a hand in
Georgia politics."
Among other acts of the last
legislature criticised by the people
and press generally is the ] aw rc .
nuiring a Hoard of tax Equalizers
oomposed of five citizens of the
county. the gentlemen compos-
the Hoard i of r.. this county, . wc _
J
are ar competent as those , of ,
pese
any other county, but they will be
at a loss to place a value on a great
deal of the property in the county.
Besides if a man is sworn to his
tax returns it looks like an attempt i
to impeaih him and the Hoard cer-
tainly says by its actions that a
man swears to a falsehood if they
consider the property worth more :
than than the owner says it is worth
A man should be the best judge of
what his propety is worth, Then
the Hoard i.-> allowed to meet thirty
itnes in one year and each ohe of
the 1'Oard receives three dollars
per day for compensation counting
thirty days at three dollars per day
for each member of tne Boaad it
will cost the county $450,00.
Will the increase in the taxes pay
the expenses? 1 his remains to be
seen.

It is estimated by Prof. Lesley and oth¬
ers who have made a careful study of the
petroleum supply, that the American stock
is now rapidly approaching exhaustion,
and that within a score of years the accu¬
mulations of millions of years of geologic
time will be practically used up. Up to the
beginning of 1SS5 the quantity raised in the
United States had reached the enormous
l otul of 2(51.000,000 barrels. In 1SS5 the
yield was 21,042,041 barrels.
Fou many years the advocates of an ex¬
clusively vegetable diet inveighed so heavi¬
ly against the use of fatty substances, es¬
pecially swine’s flesh in all its forms, that
a large portion of the population came to
believe that such food was very unwhole¬
some. But of late a reaction has set in on
this subject, and fatty tood (including pork,
bacon and ham), when properly cooked, is
not only nutritious, but that such food is
necessary to the proper sustentation of the
human system.
When a small piece of potassium, the
sire of a grain of corn, is dropped into a
tumblerful of water, some of the oxygen of
the water leaves its hydrogen, owing to the
intense heat which the chemical action pro¬
duces, and combines with the metaUie po
tassiuin, causing a violet, bluish flame.
When the piece of potassium is placed on
the wish of a coal-oil or alcohol lamp the
