Columbia university in boiling away a
silver dime. The dime was cut in strips
and laid iu the cup of one of the car¬
bons of the arc light. The pointed car¬
bon of the arc was placed above this
and a strong current turned on. Under
the intense heat the dime melted, sim¬
mered and then boiled like water. In
two minutes it had boiled away into
vapor. Professor Pupin. who conducted
the experiment, declared any substance
on earth, even granite rock, may be
boiled away in similar fashion if only
sufficient heat is brought to bear on it.
Be also stated that any gas or liquid
would freeze if it could be submitted to
sufficient cold.

cause of the broken engagement between
Lieutenant Teddy Dupont of the garrison
Miss Warren, daughter of the inspect-
or gei f il. It was the only real, genuine
a ^ in tho place, and naturally ev-
one took the groate6t Interest in it.
The wedding day had been set and ar-
inude for a honeymoon trip.
Tho women were hunting up things that
might perliaps bo made decent to wear,
The lovers themsolvos seemed huppy as
dky was long, and things were run- (

boll. Then, ns Mrs. James expressed it,
before you could say “Jack Robinson ,
Sh Miss « 8 WartenTparteTa^af Warren departed a day alter ter for°New for isew '
York, and Lieutenant Dupont started on
his downward race to the devil. It was
all very strange; no one understood, and
no one understands now, unless it be En- i
riqueta!
After leaving West Point Toddy Du- ;
pont had, ns is often tho case with young j |
and untried officers, started out on a pret-
ty rapid pace. At that time he was sta-
•»**-• men go the »“>«*s»f pace. But before h -y. he had w the
time to do very much harm to himself his
regiment had been ordered out to Pluos
Altos, n New Mexican sand, adobe, mos¬
quito, Greaser, border town, where Unit¬
ed States troops were needed several times
per month to quell disturbances that were
arising between the few min¬
ing whites and the Greaser-Mexicau pop¬
ulation.
None of tho officers’ wives went at first,
since it was a more than usually rough
town. Later when things had quieted
down they would come. And so it happen¬
ed that for several months there was no
white woman in the town of Pinos Altos.
Had there been, perhaps this story would
nover have been written.
At first things had been rather exciting,
for the Greasers and Mexicans and Indi¬
ans, resenting the entry of the soldados,
had “raised Gain’’ to some extent. And,
as u the making of trouble and worry
preferred the methods of stiakmg
Cm bank niter (.ark, burning
•s and hurriedly equipped barracks.
et* * .‘Lieutenant Dupont and his men had
sou 0 little work in tho quieting of the
turbulent spirits. So long as tho rows
were on Dtipont was in his glory. Wuen
they were it and there was notWr.g on
aarth to occupy him but a few hours’ duty
eac.i day, ho became desperately bored and ,
ill tampered. lie thought longingly 01
the big cities, with their glittering streets,
tho music, parks, clubs and other places,
Thi n ho would stnro angrily from tho bar- j
rooks window down at tho sandy town of
Pinos Altcs, with its 0110 solitary mission
church and the low adobe houses that
seemed populated equally by burros, pigs
and fat, brown babies. There were oven
no fiowtrs to ba teen—nothing but prick¬
ly cactus and miserable, dried up mes-
quita—not a pleasant outlook for a young
and unproved officer who had yet to learn
that duty i? duty whether at West Point
or Pinos 'Altos. It was too much for
young Dupont, and he cast about him
without further delay for something to
amuso him—anything to amuso him.
Not that you could call Enriqueta amus¬
ing—far from it! But sho was protty—so
pretty! A woman of tho sierras, half
Mexican and half Indian, with some sprin¬
kling of half forgotten Spanish blood, she
was typical of her dusky, passionate race,
and for a long while (two months) Dupont
was wildly iu love with her and had seri¬
ous thoughts of presenting her to his peo¬
ple at heme as Mrs. Teddy Dupont. But
common sense stepped in and made him
realize that the scraped and blanketed
girl, oven with her beautiful eyes and fnco
and figure, would look odd at the head of
the breakfust table at homo, She might
look still stranger receiving his mother’s
guests in the stately old drawing room
and at the dinners that wero given week¬
ly by the old fashioned folk in his county.
Ho shuddered as I10 thought of the latter,
tyei^ though at that samo moment Enri¬
queta ffas swinging in his hammock and
taking sly puffs new and tbon from Isia
own cfcaretto, for die could not bo made
to sea that forks end knives should be used
instead of fingers when eating.
Tho other men in the camp of course
knew About “Dupont’s flirtation with that
good looking Greaser girl,” but it was
none of their business to say anything
about tbe doings of their superior officer.
Besides, many of a them had flirtations ot
their own from Sublieutenant Jackson
down to tho boots boy, and people who
live in glass houses should not throw
stones.

dearest Ted must ehew everybody that he
could give up drinking. Sho belioved in
him, but ho must give up drinking for
her father’s vako.
What tho poor fellow endured in his hard
fight against the cr,-u ing for drink only a
man who lipr been through it can eny.
Thepo wero times when ho did not duro go
near Dorothy, others when he would lock
himself into bis room, still others when I10
would almost give up. Sometimes ho
would sit with his revolver in his hand,
fighting the craving and half determined
to _______________ end it all with tho pistol. Then _________ Dor-
otby’s sweet face would come beforo him,
und he wouW 0 n And in tho end it
wn3 a ]j conquered, and lie knew that ho
would never feel the craving again—for
Porothv’s sake
Ti" tuning day was fixed. Dorothy’s
things had been sent ior, since she. would
not leavo him to go homo fer thorn, and
tho two were as happy as people ever got
to bo in this world.
Only at times would , ^ Dupont think of
Enriqueta He liad wanted to tell Dor-
othy about her, but Dorothy would hear
nothing. With her trusting arms about
bis neck, she had told him that sho want-
ed to hear nothing about the past; tha
future would be hers. Tho only thing
was—the drinking! That would bo all
that could part thorn.
That right there was a tiny danoe at
the barracks for about ten couples. Some
of the Tenth from Las Vogas had at great
expense and trouble come over to Pinos
Altos to attend it, and the ladies had put
forth extra efforts to have things in shapo.
The wail ; were covered with regimental
cifiers, swords, sabers and flags; the mu-
sic was to bo extraordinarily good and the
supper ditto; also there was ico.
Dupont changed hurriedly from riding
clothes to regulation evening dress, for he
was to tni-e Durotny as a matter of course.
They had been riding that afternoon.
It was u warm, sultry night. Dupont
was tiiirsty, end thero was 110 seltzer in
his room, neither was his man about to
get sonic, 11 lie was obliged to put up
witl > common water that stood cooling in
an Indian olia on the window sill. Ho no-
t-k'cd tho water’s extraordinary coldness
and the taste that tho pottery imparted to
“-but nothing else, fur his tie was too
stiff and I.is cuffs wouldn’t button. He
soon iie-pan to feed lather dizzy, but
thought i was tho boat. Ho struggled on
at cuffs, still feeling queer; nis face
began to burn, there was an awful rcar-

was that ho was poisoned; then came un-
consciousness or madness—whatever it
was—for 20 minutes later ho was tearing
through the street half dressed, shouting,
singing, iaughir.g and cursing, waving
his arms in the air, his face purple—uude-
niably and hon'ibly drunk, ns every one
