Tfi* Hiwy Modern Girlhood Smiles
Over Her Trlvinl Interest*.
Aa extract from the “journal of a
young lady of fashion” several centu
ries ago makes one feel quite relieved
that It Is not really a part of elegant
living nowadays to keep journals, re
marks an exchange. Poor little faded
Journal! Ths delicate little hand that
penned those cramped lines, maybe,
was given to “John Grey.” For ro
mance’s sake, let’s hope that It was.
“7 o’clock—Went to walk with the
lady, my mother, in the courtyard.
“ 10 o’clock—Went to dinner; John
Grey, a most comely youth—hut what
ia that to me? A virtuous maiden
should he entirely under the direction
of her parents. John ate but little and
stole a great many tender looks at me;
said women would never be handsome,
In his opinion, who were not good na
tured. I hope my temper Is not Intol
erable. * * Uoso from the table;
the company all desirous of walking
In the fields; John Grey would lift me
over every stile, sud twice he squeezed
my bands with vehemence. 1 cannot
say I should hare nny objections to
John Grey; he plays at prison bars ns
well as any of the country gentlemen
and Is remarkably dutiful to his par
ents, my lord and lady, and never
misses church on Sunday.”
A sample of poetry dedicated to “a
young lady” shows what women were
■erred with iu the way of literature:
A nd he wboiw lot Is Messed,
As only man’s (-an be,
Will Unit too euro » rest
On earth with thee,
w hers all la bright and fair
And sorry Joys entomb,
Thou’lt be transplanted there
And ever bloom.
O ye shades of our ancestresses!
What would you think of the contents
of some of our library shelves? What
would you think of the rosy cheeked
girl who would consider such poetry
as you read simply too insipid and stu
pid for anv use?—Baltimore Herald

Our Trip to the Country
We lmd an invitation to a box
i supper at Ludville last Saturday
night anil accordingly immediate
ly after dinner'Saturday Editor
Nation with Deputy Sheriff
\\ heeler made ready and put out
for t he little village the place of
our destination. The box supper
was given by the citizens of the
place to get funds with which to
give the children a Christmas tree.
Yea editor iproved himself a bid
der as lie got the two first and
fourth boxes that were sold. Af
ter the lioxes were all sold the
election was held to determine
prettiest young lady present. The
candidates were Misses Zona
Stewart, Edna Moss, Ella Ander
son and Printie Fields. The con
test was indeed a close one and
much interest was taken but when
the polls ware closed and count
made Miss Zona Stewart was de
clared elected. In all $18.25 was
taken in, which will go towards
the Christmas tree. We spent
the night with W. A. Hamrick,
one of Ludvill’s best eitizens and
school teachers. About 12:80
Saturday night we were aroused
by some one wanting Mr. Wheeler.
The man was shown into our
room and lie gave us warrants
for some men living about four
miles. Ho wanted them served
that bight, lull the dark windy
and rainy night night defied yea
scribe and we did not go until
the next morning. On investiga
tion we found that the men were
charged with throwing rocks and
shooting at the house of Mrs. Lou
Holmes. We succeeded in locat
ing two of the parties Sunday
morning and a trial set for 10
o’clock Monday morning at Cross
court ground’. When the
time came Monday we wore on
the grounds, hut no trial was had
as some of fl e witnesses were not
on hand and accordingly the ti ia I
was put off until the first Satur
day in next Jamuuy. Those
against whom warrants were issued
are George Graham and His son
Harrison, T. II. Carpenter and a
man named Pruett. Lawyer
Watts, of Fairmount, was on
hand for the defense and much
fun was had though then 1 was no
court. We took dinner Sunday
with Squire C. W. Holmes, who is
one of the best officers in the
county. We took tea Sunday
nigbt with our Ludville represen
tative, Andrew Stewart, and
sweetly slumbered on a big soft
bed at Rev. Dave Andersons. All
in all our trip was fraught with
more varied experiences than any
we ever had, but we eamo in con
tact with many of the good people
of the west side and hope to again
mingle with them.
Not long ago the relatives or a
young lady came and carried her
home. It was the old, old story.
The girl is ruined for life but tho
one who caused her run goes in the
best society quite likely and is not
even frowned at. This is the dif
ference between tho two sexes.
The girl goes down when she
makes a misstep and the young
man who is just as guilty as the
girl goes up.if there is any change.
We believe the gates of hell are
standing ajar for any one who
ruins the character of a young
girl.—Dahlouoga Nugget.
