A Test That Caught.
The following extraordinary coinci
dence occurred at Tinwald recently: A
young preacher, who has lately mar
ried, was planned to take the morning
service, but, by a misreading of the
plan, he mistook his appointment for
'an evening one. Consequently the con
gregation gathered on the Sunday
morning waited In vain for his appear
ance. Thereupon one of the office bear
ers of the church present undertook
the service. Totally unaware that the
absent preacher had recently married,
he electrified and amused his audience
by announcing as his text. “He has
married a wife, and therefore he can
not come.”—New Zealand Herald.

Played a Joke on (he (lood Man.
A good story is told on the Rev.
Mr. Ilagcrnnn, says the Oxford
(Mich.) Leader. At the annu.

when the question came up, Ilage

the same sa ary—will please'rise.”
Not one rose, and Ilagerman felt
about as m an as mortal man could
feel. Ij lit the eli:iinnaii m e again,
putting the question:
“All those in favor of keeping the

Every one rose. When it dawn

been only jo! leg With him, the
scowl on his face broke away into a
broad grin—as an icicle breaks away
in sj a kling water before the bene
ficent rays of a warm run. Some of
bis best fi.ends had planned the
scheme, which worked to perfection.

An AiieSenf Coin.
One of the prized curios of the Phila
delphia mint is a coin which is 2,000
years old and which was coined at the
ancient mint of that other Philadelphia
of the far east mentioned in tlie Bible.
It Is still In good condition, and the
inscription Is perfectly legible. The
design on the face of the coin bears a
striking resemblance to the Goddess
of Liberty of our own currency, and
underneath is the one word “Demos,”
which means “the people.” On the
other side is the figure of Diana, with
her bow arched, and the inscription,
“Diana, Friend of the Philadelphians.”
When this coin was struck off. Phila
delphia was the most important city of
Lyd'a. The prize was picked up in
Europe by Joseph Mieiiley. a cele
brated Philadelphia violin maker and
numismatist of high repute, who pre
sealed it to the mint.—Philadelphia

While the State Department ad
mits that tlie T* kish indemnity has
been paid by means of the contract
recently made at Constantinople for
the building of a crii’M-r by the
Cramps, it declares that it is no way
a party to this meane of settling the
difficulty. It will not hand the $ 100 ,.
C< 0 extra, paid for the warship, nor
have anything to do with the matter.
It will simply cease to press the claim
The credit for causing a settlement
of this exas|verating case is indisput
ably due to the patient persistence of
the State Department’s rt presenta
tions to the Sublime Porte, which
has never been peimitted for an in
stant to overlook the debt in Us

Treasury, but there will be no author

to the Cramps places it exactly in
the category of any suit settled out of
court, io far as the Government of
llie United States is concerned, and
according to the urnerstauding here,
the first and only information this
Government will have that a settle
