IOHN IIKNDRIX.
After a long illness, John Hen
drix died, at his home in this
county, m the evening of April
80tli 1901, and was buried at Long
church the next day. He
1 *
was 88 years of , age and had lived,
the most of his long life, a', and
in the immediate vicinity of. the
place of his death. In early life
lie spent nearly two years in Cali
forma, mining for gold, and made
some money, with which he bought
home nt which he died. His
wife, who survives him, and to
whom he had been married more
than fifty years, was Miss Eleanor
Darnell, a woman of rare energy
and force of character. Seven
children were horn to them, all of
whom were brought up and sur
vive him. He was, in iuanj re
spects, a most remarkable man.
During the late civil war, he was v
devoted friend to the national
government, and served as a Un
ion soldier, in Company K. nth
Tenuesss Mounted Infanti.y, and
was honorably discharged at the
end of the war. While he hiuf
not enjoyed the advantages or
such an education as is now possi
ble, and common, he possessed, in
a marked degree, the elements of
primitive honesty. All confided
in him, and he was always implic
itly trusted, in every relation in
life. From his early manhood, he
had been a member of the Baptist
church, and he now sleeps in the
grave-yard, at the church, where
his familiar form was, for so many
years to be be seen. His life ex
emplifies, as few lives do, all that
human nature may expect, in the
kind husband and father: the
good neighbor; the steadfast
friend; a patriotic devotion to
his countrv and its government,
and as the man of stern and un
compromising- integrity, Hie
memory should be cherished, and
his grave strewn with the flowers of
our rememberance, as long as the
are counted by years.
He is on the other side now, and
the redeeming thought, to be found
in words, that befit his departure
is: Good bye till we meet again.”

Editor Walter, Franklin, of the
Athens (Tenn.) Citizen, arrived in
the city Wednesday, intending to
spend some time here among rela
tives and friends, but on the fol
lowing morning he received a tele
gram from his foreman stating
that his outfit had been wrecked
by miscreants the night before He
immediately left for the scene.
Mr. Franklin, supported by the
better element of his city, has
been making a fight on the saloon
interest, and, in a recent munici
pal election, made it decidely hot
for the “whiskey ring,” and came
near causing their defeat, and no
doubt this dastardly method was
resorted to by them to get even.
We sincerely hope Mr. Franklin
will succeed in fixing the blame
and having the guilty parties pun
ished. The Penitentiary is the
proper place for such characters.

CATARRH CAN BE CURED BY

“U.VNtilCH IN THU li A It Til AND AIH| DANGER EVERY WHIRR." *
A Wlio and Venerable Doctor Talks about Advanced Scion**.
In a leading hotel. In a great city, a famous and aged physician was con ram
lug. Listening to his wise and sententious discourse, were a group of well
dressed men, evidently lawyers, business men and commercial travelers.
My firm belief, is “that medical science is certain yet to show that all dis
eases without exception are caused by invisible germs which are living organ 1
isms. Here is the germ of that terrible disease diphtheria. Here is the oaculua
of typlioid fever; and here is the still more dreadful bacillus of tubercle which
causes that most destructive of all diseases, consumption. Thia of that very
common and supposed incurable disease, catarrh,"
“I wish, Doctor,” said the traveling man, “that you would tell u* about
catarrh. I have had it for years, and I am thoroughly discouraged.” ■>
The Doctor answered. “Catarrh, like diphtheria, consumption, typhoid
fever, and a host of other diseases, is the result of a microbe invading the blood
and attacking especially specially the mucous membrane. This foul and most disgusting
disease is prevalent been in the United States and it is rare to meet ont
who is not, or lias not troubled more or less with it. How often is he oi
she obliged to remain at home from pleasant entertainments, deprive theznaelvsa
of many intellectual treats, from fear of tiie disagreeable odor arising from ca
tarrhal affections. In its worst phase, the patient becomes loathsome both te
himself and his friends.
“ I believe," continued this great physician, “that the true way to heal ca
tarrh is to medicate the blood. This can be done only by powerful alteratives
which act as blood purifiere."
lletsy A. Marett, of Manistee, Manistee Co., Mich., writes:
Dear Sirs:—For ten years I was a sufferer from general debility and chronls
catarrh. My face was pale as death. I was weak and short of breath, I could
hardly hands walk, feet I was so always dizzy and had a ringing in my head all the time. My
and were cold. My appetite was very poor. On getting us
in the morning, ray head swam so I was often obliged to lie down again. I had
awful pains in the small of my back. 1 had a continual feeling of tirednesa.
My muscular power stopping was almost entirely gone, and I couldn't go half • dozca
steps without to rest, and often that much exercise caused me to have
a pain in my side. It seemed as though the blood had left my vcina. The doc
tors said my blood had all turned to water. I had given up all hope of ever get.
ting well. I tried the best physicians in the state, but failed to get any relief.
bought My husband got me When a bottle of Johnston’s Sarsaparilla. I took it, ana then )
another. these had been used, I was somewhat improved in
health. I continued its use, and felt I was growing stronger; my sleep wks re
kept freshing, and it seemed as' if I could feel new blood moving through my veins. 1
all on time, taking it, and now consider I myself a well and rugged woman. I work
the and am happy. am positive that the Sarsaparilla saved my life.
The 6ick headaches I have had since childhood, have disappeared, and my ca
Sarsaparilla tarrh lias almost entirely done left me. I cannot be too thankful for what Johnaton's
lias for me. I recommend all women who have sick head
aches to use your Sarsaparilla.
