tho explosion of a coai burning locomo
tive on the Nashville branch of the At
lautio Coast Line across tho North Caro
lina line that occurred two days ago iias
just boon received. The engine was
pulling a heavy freight and with two
cars broke loose. While going through
a cut the boiler exploded. Tho embank- boiler
and pilot were blown uu on an

The head of tho engineer, Fred Brown,
was takeu off as with a cleaver. He
was found seated on his box, his lett
hand firmly grasping the lever. The
fireman was blown up on the embank
ment and fatally scalded. Both cars
were wrecked. A trainman was stand
ing on one of those and was shot off by
tho coal that was blown out of the ten
der. Ho is seriously injured.
POLICEMAN MURDERED.
Drunken Young Muii Shot Him on
Slight Provocation.
Winston-Sai.km, N. O., June 11.—
Policeman William Moore was shot at
the little town of Advauco, between
Winston and Mooksviile, about 8 o’clock
last night, and died at 4 o’clock this
morning. Rufus Burton, aged about IS)
years, Was did the shooting. The officer

Knoxville, June 10.—E. Dean Dow,
one of tho best known citizens of Knox
ville, died this niorniug, aged SO years.
He came hero many years ago from
Plainfield, N. J., where his remains will
be interred. He was prominently iden
tified with the city’s development, be
ing in the real estate and insurance
business.

Fourth division at Atlanta, that 13 mar

assistance was sent, from the headquar

The reports from live of these divi
sions have been received, and on Satur
last a committee, appointed by Su

ted the fund thus far received, $3,865.65,
among the fire sufferers of the railway
postal clerks.
Consolidation In Birmingham.
Atlanta, June 12.—Harry M. Atkin
son and practically tiie same Boston
financial interests associated with him
in various Atlanta enterprises have
cured a large interest in and consoli
dated the Birmingham Railway, Light
and Power company, the Consolidated
Electric Light company and the Bir
mingham Gas company, in the city of
Birmingham. The consolidated com
panies will bo known as the Binning
ham Railway, will Light and Power com
.panv, and ho capitalized at $10,
000,000.

Ocala, Fla., June 12.—News has been
received here that Albertus Vogt has
discovered oil in the Withlacoochoe
region. Men who are not given to chas
ing phantoms arc* .-aid to be so impressed
with the discovery that they are putting
up money and taking options on laud.
Mr. Vogt was the discoverer of hard
rock phosphate in this region, and pre
cipitated the boom that followed it and
is now a matter of history.

Memphis, June 12—J. H. Wright,
pursued by bloodhounds through swamp
and canebrako for four (lays, has sur
rendered to the Memphis police. Ho is
wanted for murdering Albert Brum ley
and fatally wounding A. J- Hunt, at
iu Randolph county. Ho
intended to kill Hunt and a man named
Bloom, but instead killed Bromley, u
bystander. Wright has made startling confession
a
charging that he was at home when the
crime was committed; that there was a
conspiracy" between himself and his
youngest sou, James, aged 24, to kiii
Hunt and Bloom. A part of the con
spiracy was tlnit himself and son should
engage iu a sham fight iu the presence
of Hunt and Bloom and kill them both.
Later on tho son, ho says, killed Hunt
and fatally wounded Brnmley.
Wright savs he fled to avoid being
lynched and walked all the way to
Memphis. He is 84 years of ago and n
seems almost certain he will bo lynched
when returned to the scene of the crime.
The son will be arrested also.
Covington has been wrought up sine. will
the crime and the people say they
mete out justice without tho aid of a
court.
