Throws the Fat Into {he Fire.
The news from Washington that
President Hooker i\ Washington, of
Ttukegt-e Institute, was a guest
the wliite house, at dinner wilii Pre.-i
dent and Airs, Roosevelt and
and that after dinner there was the
usual social hour over cigars, n a
distinct shock to the favorable semi
ment that nan crystallizing in the
south f 01 the new president. The ap
pointmeut of Judge Jones in Ala
baton, and published utterances of
President Roosevelt to the effect that
he intended to appoint only got d
men to office have led southern
people to hope that a now political
era was at hand.
• While encouraging the people i in
the hope that the negro is to he ,
ly elirhinated from office in the south
president Roosevelt throws tlie f:it
tn the fire by giving countenance to
the r.egro’s claim for social equality
by having one to dine in the whits
house with himself, Mrs. Roosevelt
and children. We concede the fact
that he could not have had a more
decent negro. President Booker 'I'.
Washington is the representative
man of his race, a useful citizen ami
an able leader of bis people. But he
represents the negro race, and be
tween his people and the whites there
can be no social equality. This is not
simply local southern prejudice, hut
it is an ineradicable racial fact.
If Colonel Roosevelt desired lore
ceive negroes at bin table on a plane
ofsocial equality lie had a right to
do that in bis personal capacity be
fore he became the executive head
of tho government, but its the presi
dent of tho United States it i, a mat
ter of very grave doubt if he lias tlie
right to inaugurate a custom
is repugnaht to an overwhelming
majority of the white people of the
country in all sections, and the ten
dency of which is to open anew an
issue which has been practically
eliminated not only by argument but
unswerving and determined practice
throughout the years.
The south does not relish the negro
in office but that is a small matter
compared with its unalterable opposi
tion to social equality between the
races. President Roosevelt has flown
ib the face of public sentiment, and
precipitated an issue that has long
since been fought out and which
shoulb have been left in the list of
settled questions.—Augusta chronicle.

Kidney trouble causes quick or unsteady

It used to be considered that only urinary
