London, Oct 33.—Maria Josephine
Eastwiok, the young Philadelphia
woman who was committed Oot. 1 in
the Guild Hall police court for trial at
the Old Bailey on the charge of having
forged a railroad certificate to the value
of £10,000, was arraigned today and
pleaded guilty. Sentence was post
poned to the next session of the oourt in
order to allow an examination to be
made as to the prisoner's sanity.

HOMICIDE AT COLUM8US.
Adrian Kenney, a Store Clerk, Shoots
* William McOehee.
Columbus, Ga., Oet. 23.—The second
homicide within a week in Columbus
oocurred yestorday when Adrian Ken
ney, head clerk in the store of Smith –
Conway, on Eighth street, shot and
killed William W. McGehee, employed
at the Southern shops here. McGehee
owed the store a bill and Kenney went
to his house to collect it. McGehee was
angry at Lming approached and, as he
afterwards stated, “slapped his jaws.” called
Later in the morning McGehee
at the store, paid the bill, and, the wit
nesses say, indulged iu abnsive lan
guage, threatening the other man and
becoming very angry becauso he would
not credit him further. Finally Mc
Gehee said:
"I wiil kill the-” aud started
around the corner after him. Kenney
reached “You for wilP his Kill pistol, and will said: you?” and
mo,
shot him twice in the breast.
McGehee turned to tho door, half way
halted, us if to turn buck, and tho other
shot him again. McGehee then ran into
the street, and as he passed the window
of the store the clerk shot him twice
through rue gloss. All five bullets took
effect. McGi-nee died iu the street in a
minute or tv. o McGehee was unarmed
at the run*-. Kenney, who is now un
der arrest, refused to make a statement

Swaiu, the white man shot Saturday
night on Front street, is dead. His
half brother, Charles Elder, was with

Chicago, Oct. 21.—Burglars last night
stole $7G,C(i8 worth of stamps from the
Chicago postoffics and escaped without
leaving the slightest clew.
A tunnel, which had taken a week or
more to complete, was run from the roar
of the bunding and a hole was then
drilled through the steel bottom of the
wholesale stamp vault. There were 07
small holts around the square plate cut
out and some of the drilling iookod sev
eral days old.
The stamp vault was only six feet
away from the cashier’s vault, which
contained over $800,000 in oa.h, The
latter evidently had been the objective

this morning fire broke out in the rear
portion of the Hutchins House,one of the
leading hotels in Houston. The flames
spread rapidly to all parts of the upper
stories of the building, which is a 4
story structure, covering more than halt
a block. The guests, of whom the house
was full, were aroused and most of them
escaped. Iu fact, only one fatality is so
far known to have resulted from the
lire. This was a person who was heard

of the hotel, sink back into the flames.
The building is the property of Neu

old daughter of Joseph Goruy was
burned to death in a fire which de

rescue liis sister. The fire is thought to
have been incendiary.

LaLande is a native of Sau Francisco.

was brought to New Orleans, after hav

went straight back to Guatemala, al
