TOWN MENACED BY FLOOD.
Old and Frail L.evce Stands Between
Caruthersville and Calamity.
The town of Caruthersville, Mo.,
containing 2,300 Inhabitants, Is threat
ened with destruction by the flood. An
old levee, which is caving, alone stands
between the city ami the swollen
Mississippi.
Goverrment engineers regard it as
the most critical flood point along tho
river. Four hundred men under En
gineer Kilpatrick are working desper
ately at building a new levee.
HOPEFUL AT NEW ORLEANS.
Cessation of Stormy Weather Brings
Less Danger in River Situation.
The river gauge at acw Orleans
Sunday night was a little over 19.3,
which is only 0.2 below the record of
1897, but the sudden change from
stormy weather to sunshine and
brightness and has given renewed
hope all along the line.
With two engineers on each engine,
the danger of wrecks due to “lujman
fallibility” would lie materially de
creased, and the faithful block systems
would have a much needed reinforce
ment.

Smoking Cures
Catarrh.
A Combination of Herbs, Smoked in a

SAMPLES MAILED FREE.
Contains No Tobacco and is Pleasant
and Easy Po Use
The fact that the smoking of tobac
co is injurious to the health is no ar
gument against the use of Dr. BIos
ser’s Catarrh Cure in a pipe, or m
the form of cigarettes, as tdis remedy
contains no tohaco or any injurious
drug: The effect oi the remedy ap
plied du’ectly to the diseased part
is much hotter than the uncertain
action of medicines taken into the
stomach. This is the philosophy, pro
profound as it is simple, of the treat
ment of catarrh with Dr. Blosser’s
Catarrh Cure.
Itus the only known remedy that
can penetrate the recesses of the
head, throat and lungs. No liquid
remedy can do tins. No spry that
ever was devised-surely no “con
stitutional” nostrum taken into the
stomach—can reach the inflamed
surfaces and cleanse, soothe and
heal them as this medicated smoke
