NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
Notice is hereby given of a hearing to be held at 6:00 p.m. April 21, 2004
at Jasper City Hall before the Planning Commission of the City of Jasper,
Georgia. The purpose of the hearing is to discuss a request by the owner
Robert McClure to have parcels JA12-079 and JA12-080, Lots 9 & 10 of
0.27 cumulative acres L.L. 17,13TH DISTRICT, 2ND SECTION. Re-zoned
from R-l Single Family Residential to R-2 Multi-Family Residential. The
property has a 911 address of 291 Richards
Street, Jasper, GA and is located on the west
side of Richards Street and the north side of
Fily Circle. The recommendation of the plan
ning commission will be brought before the
City Council at 6:00 p.m., April 12, 2004.

offered
Citizens who want to protect
their local stream are invited to
learn skills for doing so through
free Adopt-A-Stream workshops
sponsored by the Upper Etowah
River Alliance.
Participants learn how to assess
the health of a stream, what pollu
tants are of concern, what to do
about problems they may
encounter, how to test water quali
ty, and more. The next workshops
are offered April 17 and May 1 in

Sewer Line Being Laid
Under New Highway
The town authorities have signed
a contract with the Shepherd Con
struction Company for the installa
tion of 3850 feet of sewer pipe with
required man-holes and stubbed-out
connections every 100 feet at a cost
of $12,500.
The sewer line will begin at the
corner of Main Street and extend
along the Tate Highway to the city
limits and will be laid under the
new highway. The new highway
calls for concrete road-bed, con
crete curb, eighteen inches of grass
strip for utility poles and a concrete
sidewalk on each side extending to
the town limits. There being no
other place to lay the pipe except
Governor proclaims “Great Generation Week ”
During a special program paying tribute to Georgia’s World War
II generation held recently in front of the state’s WWII Memorial
located near the State Capitol Building, Governor Sonny Perdue
issued a proclamation designating May 24-30, 2004 as “Greatest
Generation Week” in Georgia. This ceremony was held and
proclamation issued to encourage local government agencies, civic
groups and veterans organizations to work together in planning
and hosting events to honor Georgia’s World War II veterans in
conjunction with the dedication of America’s National WWII
Memorial on Saturday, May 29, 2004 in Washington, D.C.

The Junior class of Pickens High
School will present a dramatic mys
tery comedy, “Tree Points In,” on
Friday night at 8 p.m. Admission
150 and 250.
The cast of characters are: Janis
McGhee, Earl Holbert, Juanita
Stancil, Glenn Anderson, Bill Hen
drix, Perry Turner, Jane Cagle, Eliz
abeth Chadwick, Roy Whitfield,

FFA Boys Winners
The FFA Chapter of Pickens
High School had one of the most
successful pig shows in its history.
Two hundred spectators competed
in placing the would-be winners.
The correct placing winner was J.T.
Griffeth of Whitestone, a second
year FFA member.
The winners in the chapter con
test were Eugene Dowdy, a free trip
to enter the Rome show; Frank
Bunch, free entry in Rome show;
Charles Mullinax, $15 worth of
pure-bred baby chicks; Emory
Stewart, $10 worth of chicks; and
Harold Garland, $10 worth of
chicks.
The Rome Pig Show winners
and prizes were Eugene Dowdy, 1 st
prize, a $75 pure-bred dairy heifer;
Frank Bunch, 3rd prize, $15 worth
of New Hampshire Red baby
chicks.
Prof. J.W. Tippens, superintend
ent of Blackwell Consolidated
School in Cobb County, is in the
Marietta Hospital in a serious con
dition as the result of being thrown
from a wild horse and being pawed
in the face. He suffered face lacera
tions, fractured jaw-bone, broken
ribs and misplaced collar bone.
Prof. Tippens taught for a num
ber of years at Pickens Hi and
coached the basketball teams. He
has many friends here who have
been very much concerned about
his condition and we are glad to
report he is recovering and believed
to be out of danger.

from a deep-sea fishing trip to St.
Marks, Florida.
Coxswain John E. Cantrell, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cantrell,
has returned to the United States
with Attack Carrier Air Group One.
Since last summer the group has
cruised over 30,000 miles in the
Pacific.
