Hill City wins 3rd in state reading competition
On Saturday, March 27, Hill
City students participated in their
first ever Georgia Helen Ruffin
Reading Bowl competition and won
3rd place in the elementary school
division. The competition is held
every year and teams of five to ten
students prepare by reading as
many books as possible from a list
of 22 books. The competition con
sisted of judges asking factual ques
tions about the books. The team
was up against some stiff competi
tion from DeKalk and Cobb coun
ties (the winners) but managed to
beat out other teams from across
Georgia such as Saint Mary’s and
Augusta.
The nine students competing for
Hill City were: Courtney Clark,
Kaleb Clark, Chandler Cook,
Melissa Neese, Elika Roohi, Cori
Smith, Frankie Sparks, Kellsie
Waden and Justin Weaver. Kaleb
Clark and Chandler Cook were the
top point-earners, earning 150 of
the team’s 220 total points. The stu
dents were very proud to present
Hill City’s first ever trophy to Prin
cipal Carlton Wilson Monday
morning.
Next year’s Georgia Helen Ruf
fin Reading Bowl competition will
be hosted by Pickens County Mid
dle School, winner of the middle
school division.

Do you have trouble falling
asleep or staying asleep? Do you
snore? Do you wake up feeling un
refreshed? Are you tired during the
day? Do you find yourself falling
asleep during meetings, watching
TV or while stopped at a red light?
Do you twitch or kick your legs
while asleep? Do you act out your
dreams or exhibit bizarre behavior
while asleep? Have you ever had
muscle weakness when you laugh
or get frightened?
If you answered yes to any of
these questions, you may be one of
the 82 million Americans who suf
fer from sleep disorders. Because
National Sleep Awareness Week
was just last week, we felt it appro
priate to touch on what it means to
have a sleep disorder. “It is estimat
ed that over 40 percent of the popu
lation suffers from some type of
sleep disorder,’’ says Julie Yaeger,
RRT, co-owner of Sleep Services of
Jasper, LLC (SSJ). One of the more
prevalent sleep disorders is
Obstructive Sleep Apnea which
encompasses 15-20 million Ameri
cans, making it as prevalent as asth
ma and diabetes. Unfortunately, due
to the lack of education, sleep
apnea is often left undiagnosed and
untreated. Sleep apnea occurs when
the muscles of the neck and throat
relax during sleep causing the
tongue and soft palate to collapse,
thus obstructing air flow to the
lungs. The sleeper will try to
breathe, which is evident by the rise
and fall of the chest, but no air can
enter the lungs. This can last 10 sec
onds or longer before the sleeper
wakes up momentarily with a loud
snore or gasps. The person is often
unaware of this wakening. This
cycle continues throughout the
night resulting in falling and rising
oxygen levels in the bloodstream,
fragmented and/or non-restorative
sleep and increased pressure on the
heart resulting in high blood pres
sure, heart disease and even cardiac
arrest.
“There are treatment options for
those who suffer from obstructive
sleep apnea,” explains Yaeger. “The
challenge is getting those people to
seek treatment.” She goes on to
explain, “Some people have suf
fered so long from obstructive sleep
apnea that they don’t remember
what it feels like to not be tired.
They simply accept the fact that
they have less energy than others.”
There are other common sleep
disorders such as insomnia and peri
odic limb movements:
• Insomnia: Difficulty falling
asleep or maintaining sleep. Suffer
ers of chronic insomnia can be
severely sleep deprived which
affects their ability to concentrate;
they may be irritable, unable to deal
with daily stressors. Reaction time
may be slow, making driving very
dangerous. “Insomnia is not a dis
ease, but a symptom,” explains Dr.
David Lesch, a neurologist, sleep
specialist and medical director for
Sleep Services. “The underlying
cause must be identified to appro
priately treat insomnia.
• Periodic Limb Movements:
Involuntary rhythmic movements of
the legs, feet or arms during sleep.
These movements can cause the
patient to wake up momentarily,
thus causing fragmented sleep, day
time sleepiness or insomnia.
Sleep Services of Jasper, Sleep
Disorders Center, is a new full-serv
ice sleep disorders center located on
Hwy. 515 next to the new hospital
in Jasper. “This is the only full serv
ice sleep center within a 40-mile
radius of Jasper,” says Yaeger,
which means their services go
beyond overnight sleep studies. Dr.
David R. Lesch comes to Jasper
with over 15 years experience in the
diagnosis and successful treatment
of sleep disorders. Given the
breadth of knowledge which Dr.
Lesch offers, there is little which he
has not seen and successfully treat
ed.
The staff would like to extend an
open invitation to visit their center
or call them with any questions you
may have. They are located at 620
J.L. White Dr., Jasper; 253-2378.

SOUTHSCAPE
5 Celebrates 3rd Anniversary £
◄# SouthScape began its fourth year of business on March 19, 2004,^
4^ continuing to serve North Georgia by supplying hardscape and ero- ^4
sion control supplies. I would personally like to thank all of our cus-aL
^ tomers, and also those who have simply recommended us. u
Over the last three years, we’ve been able to grow and add new^
products to our inventory, while still providing friendly service and W*
^ competitive pricing. ^
◄# Several months ago, my aunt, Diane Walker, opened Town and^
^ Country Pet Mart next door to us. With the combination of her storey
m and SouthScape, we will strive to take care of all your feed, garden. ^
2 and hardscape needs. ^
^ I see the apparent arrival of Home Depot as a mixed blessing.^
^FFrom a business owner standpoint, it really doesn’t worry me. TheF^
^fact that a big-box store is coming signals that our little county is^-
4^ growing, which means more business for us as well. If you’ll check^4
^iwith us, we can meet and usually beat any of the big chains on about ik*
^anything we stock, especially on larger volume purchases. I think_
you’ll find the same is true at most of our local merchants’ fine
stores as well. As far as service goes, when you come to South-'
^Scape, you never have to get out of your vehicle if you don’t wantF^
to. Last time I checked, the big boys didn’t offer that.
4^ I hope your SouthScape experience so far has been a great one. If.
J^it hasn’t, please call me and I’ll make it right. If you’ve never L
^ shopped with us, call or come in and see what we can do for you._
^Service will always be our main goal, because no matter how hard
we work, we cannot survive without you, our customer.
^ Thanks again for your help in making SouthScape a success!!
