April’s National Child Abuse Prevention Month Kicks Off
“An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure”
To kick off April’s National
Child Abuse Prevention Month,
Prevent Child Abuse Pickens
(PCAP) in conjunction with Prevent
Child Abuse Georgia is displaying
383 pinwheels on the court house
lawn - one for each child reported
to the Department of Family and
Children Services as abused or neg
lected in Pickens County last year.
“The average citizen isn’t aware
of how serious a problem child
abuse and neglect are in this com
munity,” says Margy Lohman,
executive director of PCAP. “The
purpose of this Pinwheels for Pre
vention public awareness event is to
demonstrate how widespread the
problem is and to focus on the need
to prevent these incidents.”
There were more than 82,000
reported cases of child abuse and
neglect last year in Georgia — that
is an alarming 10 percent increase
from the year before. That means
every seven minutes a child in
Georgia is abused or neglected.
A recent study by the US Advi
sory Board on Child Abuse and
Neglect found that some 2,000 chil
dren in the United States die each
year as a result of abuse or neglect
— five children every day. For chil
dren under age four, child abuse and
neglect in the home are the leading
causes of death, more than the com
bined deaths caused by drowning,
car accidents, fires and injuries.
“During April we want to
increase awareness in Pickens
County that child abuse is a deadly
problem that must be eliminated
now,” explains Heather Stubbs,
president, PCAP board of directors.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a
pound of cure. It is only by making
child abuse PREVENTION a prior
ity of all concerned citizens, civic
groups, businesses and others that
the serious problem of child abuse
and neglect can be solved.”
Other activities for April include
“Change for Change,” a fundraising
drive at our local elementary and
middle schools. Buckets will be
placed in school classrooms begin
ning April 12 and remain there until
May 7. Children will be competing
with other classes to collect the
most change. The winning class
will receive a pizza party and be
featured in the newspaper. There
will also be a prize for the winning
teacher. Together, we can make a
difference.
Everyone in the area is encour
aged to support these efforts to
bring child abuse and neglect to the
forefront in Pickens County.

wheels for Prevention,” “Change
