mist Club of Jasper read their winning essays at the regular meet
ing on Thursday, April 1. Winners were: runners-up: Jess Hicks
and Jenny Carver; winner: Brenna Aldrich. The topic of the essay

each year without the tremendous help of Pickens High School
English teacher Kaye Chastain.
Do we think alike or what?
Buoyed by continuing good eco
nomic news, Pickens' County GOP
Delegates attended the 10th District
Republican Convention hosted by
the Walker County GOP. The April
2nd and 3rd event was held at the
Walker County Civic Center.
Angela Speir, Vice Chair of the
Georgia Public Service Commis
sion, addressed the large banquet
audience on Friday evening. Com
missioner Speir spoke of her con
tinuing commit- ment to the people
of Georgia as a consumer advocate
and the vital role the Georgia PSC
plays as a regulator of public utili
ties.
Commissioner Speir holds the
distinction of being the only
woman ever elected to a state-wide
office in Georgia.
At the Saturday session, repre
sentatives from the U.S. Senatorial
campaigns of Congressman Isakson
and Herman Cain spoke to the dele
gates. Congressman and U.S. Sen
ate candidate Mac Collins
expressed his strong support for
President Bush's leadership in the
war on terrorism and the efforts
being made to increase the partici
pation of the Iraqi police and mili
tary in securing their country. His
economic message stressed the
need for corporate tax reform, mak
ing the tax cuts permanent and the

elimination of frivolous corporate
law suits.
All of these inititives are needed
to improve our country's competi
tive position in the world economy
and to further strengthen our
domestic work force.
Keynote speaker, Congressman
Nathan Deal's address was inter
rupted several times by applause as
he reiterated long-standing Republi
can beliefs.
These tenets include: the indi
vidual is responsible for him or her
self, not the government; free enter
prise is the cornerstone of our eco
nomic success; freedom is worth
fighting for; family, faith and values
are always in style, and charity from
a willing heart is better than any
government program.
The Pickens delegation had the
opportunity to have lunch with our
new Georgia State Representative,
Tom Graves. Representative
Graves will attend the next Pickens
GOP meeting on April 15th.
New Minister of Music and Youth at Foothills Community Church
at Jasper Optimist meeting
JSIUIEI
You got that right.
Kevin candidly admits he is some
what out of his comfort zone but
definitely enjoys the combined
position. To illustrate the challenge,
Kevin is currently leading the 22
member choir in a post-Easter
musical called Evidence of Grace
that will be presented at Foothills
Community Church for the commu
nity on the evenings of April 17 and
18 at 6: 30. Drawing on his experi
ence in leading a 20-member
orchestra at Shadowbrook Baptist
Church, singing on a praise team at
North Metro Baptist Church in
Atlanta and writing and directing a
passion play at Hephzibah, Kevin
has inspired and excited the talented
Foothills choir. Preparing for the
musical has not hindered his youth
leadership one bit. He recently took
26 young people to Gatlinburg on a
youth retreat. For the occasion, he
researched, wrote and presented six
lessons from the Book of Ecclesi
astes about Solomon chasing after
every pleasure in the world before
coming to the conclusion that we
should, “Fear God, and keep His
commandments: for this is the
whole duty of man. (Ecc 12: 13).”
The application to youth became
immediately obvious to the kids.
Pastor John Reale, said, “We just
love Kevin and his family. We are
both delighted and blessed to have
such a talented new staff member at
Foothills.”
"How about touring the house
before the actual open house?"
How will you DSL? With high-speed Internet

schools and so much more. Whatever you
want is fast at your fingertips.
Winners present essays
He plays the French horn, sings
solos in tenor voice, directs the
choir and leads congregational
praise songs. He loves youth and
quickly builds relationships with
them.
Multi-talented Kevin Speights
graduated from the University of
Georgia, majored in music and
recently came to Foothills Commu
nity Church in Marble Hill from
Hephzibah Baptist Church in North
Carolina. He travels too. In fact, he
just came back from a national
youth leaders’ conference at Saddle
back Community Church in San
Diego where Rick Warren, author of
the immensely popular book The
Purpose Driven Life, preached
about taking risks for your faith. He
has even been on mission trips to
places like Bella Russia and Hon
duras. And now, he is the new min
ister of music and youth at
Foothills. For just being a mere 32
years old, he has already had many
life experiences. Kevin’s wife Jami
plays the clarinet, also loves youth
and is likewise a UGA graduate.
They have one daughter named
Kevin Speights and family.
He’s now the minister of music
and youth at Foothills Commu
nity Church
Nicole.
These days, it is somewhat
unusual to combine the ministries
of music and youth, but Kevin has
somehow spread himself more than
adequately between both jobs.
