Pickens County Middle School bands to present concert
An Evening Under the Stars at the Terraces
R
The Pickens County Middle
School Band Booster Club will
present the PCMS bands in a bene
fit concert at the Terraces of Big
Canoe Saturday, April 24. The Ter
races is a beautiful, open amphithe
ater that lends itself to events such
as this and, according to the Farm
ers Almanac, the evening promises
to be clear and cool (a rain date of
May 8 is reserved).
The PCMS Honor Band has con
secutively won many awards over
the years under the direction of
Mary Land. Most recently the
Magna Cum Laude Award was pre
sented Feb. 12 followed by band
performances at Emory University
and Reinhardt College. Ms. Land
and her band always deliver amaz
ing concerts and the incredible per
formance of her students reflects
the love and dedication she has for
her profession. Almost half, over
200, of the student body of PCMS
participate in band. Most of these
young people come into the pro
gram with little or no training and
in a matter of weeks are playing
compositions.
Due to Land’s philosophy of “no
child left behind from band,” the
schools band budget is stretched to
the ultimate limit. This performance
will help to offset costs and pur
chase new instruments not easily
affordable by most students. The
PCMS Booster Club, under the
leadership of David Stuart, has
assisted Ms. Land and her staff in
realizing her dream of exposing
children to avenues they may never
have traveled. Music programs,
such as those at PCMS, are under
severe budget cuts and scrutiny. In
order to continue, community
involvement is essential.
Ms. Land and Clara Pantazopou-
los, associate director, have planned
an evening of traditional town band
compositions consisting of march
es, jazz, musical themes, movie
themes, guest soloists and special
guest conductors. Particularly fun
for the kids will be a “trash can”
composition. The highlight of the
evening may very well be a special
composition by Sam Hazo, titled
“Rivers.” Mr. Hazo composed the
piece especially for the PCMS band
and it is a haunting and exhilarating
composition in response to Ms.
Land’s challenges of losing half of
her students when a new middle
school was formed in 2002.

Making A Difference In Our Lives
rfl pril is Community Banking Month, a month to celebrate banks
striving to make our communities a better place to live. This time
of year, we like to take this opportunity to celebrate community bank
ing. Community banks are recognized for personalized individual
service, low fees and focus on the local economy. Whereas many
mega-banks tend to place a priority on serving large corporations,
we focus our attention on the needs of local families and businesses.
Community banks also channel most of their loans to the neighbor
hoods where their depositors live and work thereby helping the com
munity to grow and prosper. We strive to serve you with all the
financial services you need and deserve because YOU are the rea
son we are in business!
Our community bank is a small business so we understand the
needs of other small businesses. We understand life's little surprises,
and we want to help because we want to invest in the lives of our
friends and neighbors.
It is our commitment to make a difference everyday in the lives
of our customers and in the community in which we live.
