Great American Cleanup off to good start
AARP and hospital both have projects underway
The Great American Cleanup is
getting off to a good start. The
AARP has their project started in
downtown Jasper between the Keep
Pickens Beautiful Office and North
Georgia Bank.
AARP Members plan to clean
up and replant the flower bed next
to the sidewalk in front of the park
ing lot. Several members started last
week by planting three Crepe Myr
tles.
Kinzer Nurseries donated the
plants for this project.
The Mountainside Medical Cen
ter Women’s Auxiliary has also
started on their beautification proj
ect at the new hospital. These volun
teer ladies plan to make planters to
be placed in the garden area at the
cafeteria in the hospital.
Keep Pickens Beautiful would
like to say thank you to both organi
zations for volunteering to have a
part in the Great American Cleanup.
We look forward to seeing their
projects when they are completed.
Junior Optimists
Yard Sale
this Friday
and Saturday
The Jasper Middle School Junior

treasure.
The school will hold a fundrais

April 9-10 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
each day. All proceeds will be
donated to the Appalachian Chil

You may bring donations to the
school Monday-Friday from 7 a.m.
until 5 p.m. or call 253-1760 and
ask for Ann Roper or Sonja Gordy
to make other arrangements.
It is not every day your junk is
able to give a child a home. Be a
part of us - changing our communi

More Georgians filing taxes electronically
Tips for last-minute filers in Georgia
iar with the idea of filing electroni
cally, we’re seeing them grow more
comfortable with trying e-file,” says
IRS spokesperson Eric Erickson.
“People who e-file discover it is
faster and easier than paper filing
and that there’s less chance of mak
ing math errors. And the best part —
you can get your refund faster!”
With the tax filing deadline close
As Georgians prepare to file their
federal taxes before the April 15
deadline, the Internal Revenue Ser
vice reports that electronic filing
remains at record levels. More than
1.3 million tax returns have been
submitted in Georgia alone through
e-file so far this year, a 12 percent
increase from last year.

at hand, the IRS offers some tips for
those still working on their returns:
• Check Social Security numbers
to ensure accuracy - this includes
the taxpayer, spouse, dependents
and persons listed in relation to
claims for the Child Care or Earned
Income Tax Credits. Missing, incor
rect or illegible SSNs can delay or
reduce a tax refund.
• Double check your figures.
Think about e-file or Free File -
math error rates decrease signifi
cantly when taxpayers electronically
file their returns.
• Remember to sign and date
your form - this easy-to-avoid error
will cause the processing of your
return and refund to be delayed.
Both spouses must sign a joint
return, even if only one had income.
Anyone who is paid to prepare a
return must also sign it.
• Attach all required schedules.
• Request an extension of time to
file. Taxpayers can file Form 4868
or call 888-796-1074 for an auto
matic four-month extension of time
to file to August 16. Remember, an
extension only gives more time to
file, you must still pay 90 percent of
taxes owed by April 15.
• Don’t panic if immediate pay
ment is not an option. There are
options if you can’t pay the full
amount owed immediately. Taxpay
ers may request an IRS installment
agreement or charge their balance
due on a credit card.
• Taxpayers claiming the Child
Tax Credit Tax should be sure to
subtract last year’s Advance Child
Tax Credit when figuring the credit.
These were the checks parents
received in the mail last summer.
There’s a worksheet for this in the
instructions for Forms 1040 and
1040A and in IRS Publication 972,
“Child Tax Credit.”

Call 800-829-1040 or visit a local
IRS office or volunteer site for help.
