Work underway on Cove Road Fire Station
“The most important things peo
ple have is their homes and their
families,” he said. “I retired as a
full-time firefighter (in Albany) and
I’ve seen people lose everything
they have.”
Knighton said the Grandview
Department’s volunteers are proud
of the fact they have never missed a
call since he became chief in
August of 1999 and often have as
many as seven volunteers respond.
Last year the department handled
106 calls.
Commissioner Bill Newton said
the new fire department is part of a
long range effort to improve public
safety, something he believes the
citizens strongly support based on
the SPLOST referendum last year
which is funding this station in
addition to other projects, including
enhanced 911.
“We’ve moved two steps ahead
of where we were,” he said. “We
now have county owned stations at

He said they are looking for
property to add another new station
in the Henderson Mountain area
which would be operated by the
Bethany department.
Newton and Knighton said this
makes a major improvement in pub
lic safety and it will increase even
more when the county and city com
plete water line projects in that area.
Having fire hydrants in that area
will make a “tremendous” differ
ence in fire protection and in the
insurance rates, both Knighton and
Newton said.
Knighton said it will be up to his
department to raise funds to com
pletely furnish and equip the new
station, including purchasing a res
cue truck.
There are no special fundraisers
planned, but the department will
continue its regular fundraising proj
ects.
Knighton said the new station
will also require more volunteers.
Anyone wishing to join the depart
ment or make a donation can call
Knighton at 770-893-3571.
Newton said this project was
greatly helped when Frank and Bar
bara Pendley donated the property
for the station, which was valued at
$30,000.
“On behalf of the citizens of the
county I want to thank Barbara,
Frank and their son, John. We really
appreciate what they did. It shows
they care about the people of this
county. When you donate property
you really give back to the county,”
he said.
Barbara Pendley said there were
two primary motivations for donat
ing the property.
First, as a memorial to Tommy
Crumbley, a Grandview firefighter,
who died last year. “He really
worked to make this happen,” she
said.
Secondly, Ms. Pendley said that
through her son, John, who drives
the Grandview tanker truck on many
calls, she sees the dedication of vol
unteer firefighters.
“People don’t understand what
fire departments do for a county,”
she said. “They are the first respon
ders much of the time. You don’t
think about them until you need
them. When they come to your
house, then you think, ‘What would
I have done without them.’”

School Board meets
Currently there are 4,071 stu
dents enrolled in the Pickens Coun
ty School system.
• The board heard from attorney
Phil Hartley who is working with
administrators to update the
school’s policy manual. Hartley
recommended the board drop many
policies which duplicate state law
or are outdated.
“Where a policy has gotten
school boards in trouble is where it
was written a long time ago and
nobody uses it, nobody follows it
because it was written 15 years ago
and is obsolete,” Hartley told the
board.
Hartley said some policies are
unnecessary and simply reiterate
state law.
“When boards restate the law in
their policy it is unnecessary and
can cause problems. We recom
mend doing away with those poli
cies and getting rid of those policies
that don’t inform or provide guid
ance. We also recommend getting
rid of policies no one remembers
why they were adopted in the first
place and those that are no longer
applicable.”
Hartley will meet with adminis
trators and the board to present sec
tions of the policy manual for
review and discussion over the
coming months.
