State Patrol Report
The Georgia State Patrol at Can
ton announced that 20 traffic acci
dents in Pickens County were inves
tigated during the month of March.
These accidents resulted in 23
injuries.
In the area of enforcement by
Post 28, Sergeant First Class A.S.
Tucker said his officers had made
266 arrests and issued 451 warnings
during the month.
Various courts in Pickens County
disposed of 222 pending traffic
cases during the month with the fol
lowing: 39 guilty pleas, 165 bond
forfeitures, 13 cases dismissed and
5 nolo contendre pleas. Sergeant
Tucker explained that cases and
arrests would seldom be the same
number for each month because
some cases are carried over into the

American Red Cross reminds residents
to be prepared for tornado season
The American Red Cross wants
everyone to be prepared for the pos
sibility of tornadoes this spring.
March, April and May are our
prime season for tornadoes. Even
though we have not had much
severe weather so far, we all need to
be prepared. Your local American
Red Cross wants to list a few
American
Red Cross
I helped with local
American Red Cross
Disaster Relief
reminders for your safety:
• Know the difference between a
Watch and a Warning.
• Always go to a basement or a
room in the interior part of the
house.
• Stay away from windows.
• Practice a tornado drill at home
(all schools have them).
• Purchase a weather alert radio.
• Prepare a home disaster kit.
Our local Jasper CVS Pharmacy
will be selling these Tornado
Squares, and with each purchase
you will register for a Home Disas
ter Kit to be given away courtesy of
CVS and Red Cross.
We all remember Nov. 11, 2002,
so help the American Red Cross
prepare us for a safe spring. Please
contact Andy Thompson for more
information on how to prepare for a
disaster, 189 Hwy. 53, Ste. 203,

20/20 VISION
£ What does it mean when your eye
/k Z* doctor tells you that you have 20/20
FA vision? 20/20 is a term used to
W describe normal visual acuity (the
• VjF clarity or sharpness of vision) mea
sured at a distance of 20 feet. If you
have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly
at 20 feet what should normally be
Dr. Leslie Whiting seen at that distance. If you were to
have 20/100 vision, it means that you
must be as close as 20 feet away to see what a person with
normal vision can see at 100 feet.
20/20 does not always mean perfect vision. There are
other factors involved with vision such as peripheral vision.
Even if you have 20/20 vision but reduced peripheral vision,
you may not pass your driver’s test. Other factors involve
eye-hand coordination, visual perception, focusing ability,
and color vision.
People that can see well at a distance but not able to focus
close-up have what is called hyperopia or farsightedness.
Many people can see up close but not far away. This is called
myopia or nearsightedness. Around the age of 40 most peo
ple develop what is called presbyopia. This literally means
“aging eyes”. Sometimes you’ll see older people pushing
their arms out to read a book and having to squint. Their eyes
are not able to focus up close like they used to.
A comprehensive eye exam by a doctor of optometry can
diagnose these conditions and prescribe glasses, contacts, or
vision therapy to improve your vision. If your vision is
reduced due to eye disease, the use of medication or surgery
is sometimes needed.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Leslie
Whiting at:
