The book Racing to a Cure by
Neil Ruzic is not a cancer memoir.
It is a cancer cure memoir. In 1998
Neil Ruzic was diagnosed with
mantle-cell lymphoma, the dead
liest cancer of the lymph system.
Instead of following recommended
courses of chemotherapy and radia
tion, he took control of his treat
ment by investigating cures being
developed in the nation’s cancer-
research laboratories. The author
went on the offensive: visiting
scores of laboratories, gathering
information, talking to researchers
and effectively becoming his own
patient-care advocate. This book
presents his findings. A scathing
critique of chemo culture as well as
unscientific “alternative” therapies,
the book endorses state-of-the-art
molecularly based technologies,
making it an illuminating and nec
essary read for anyone interested in
cancer research, especially patients
and their families and physicians.
Neil Ruzic was expected to die
within two years of his initial diag
nosis. Five years later he has been
declared cancer-free and considers
himself cured.
Increased responsibilities
for Bethany-Salem VFD
This clean up crew devoted part of a recent Saturday to preparing
the Salem station for a state inspection.
In recent months the Bethany-
Salem Volunteer Fire Department
has had a dramatic increase in
home, personal property, medical
emergency and other first respon
der responsibilities. This is a result
of construction in two and possibly
three new subdivisions in the com
munities located west and south
west of Jasper — the 1500 acre Pre
serve subdivision on and around
Sharp Mountain, a second subdivi
sion along both sides of Henderson
Mountain Road between State
Road 108 and Pettit Road and
unconfirmed reports of a 100 plus
subdivision to be built on the west
side of Pettit Road between
Richard Trail and Cut Off Road.
This rapid increase in home con
struction assures that a lot of folks
are, or in the near future will be,
moving into the Bethany and Salem
communities.
A recent brush fire at the very
top of Sharp Mountain is but one
example of the challenges facing
the Bethany-Salem VFD. The road
to the top of Sharp Mountain is
very steep, much too steep for
large, heavily loaded existing fire
trucks to climb. It was necessary to
call in Grandview VFD from the
east side of the county for the use
of their specially equipped moun
tain fire truck to reach and put out
the brush fire.
Thanks to the SPLOST, recently
enacted by the voters of Pickens
County, Bethany-Salem VFD
expects to obtain this summer or
fall a specially equipped mountain
fire truck similar to the one at
Grandview. Federal Homeland
Security funds have been promised
to first responder firefighters for
training and equipment to be fully
prepared in the event of a terrorist
attack or some other disaster. To-
date, these funds have not trickled
down to our rural and semi-rural
communities.
Training
Chief Tim Prather has an ongo
ing training program offered to both
new volunteers and firefighters who
have completed basic training
courses. Visitors are always wel
come to come out, meet your neigh
bors and learn about the department,
its mission, current and ongoing
training programs. These meetings
are held each Monday night at 7 at
the Bethany Station on SR 108.
Bethany-Salem volunteer fire
fighters have trained and worked
very hard in recent months and
years to bring the station’s ISO rate
from 9 down to 5 and reducing
homeowners’ insurance rates.
