PHS students returning from Spring Break
will find healthier snacks on campus
Principal says nutrition a growing concern among educators
On April 2, the Coca-Cola com
pany conducted a taste test of four
new products with a group of 10th
grade students at Pickens High
School.
The school’s advisory council, a
committee of teachers, and nutrition
experts have been investigating the
availability of more healthful drinks
and snacks to offer the students,
instead of the caffeine colas and fat
laden snacks that have previously
been found in the vending
machines.
“With the rise of teenage obesity
and a nation-wide concern over the
health of our children, we believe it
is an important responsibility of
adults in our learning community to
encourage our students to eat foods
that have higher nutritional value,
less sugar, less caffeine, and less fat
than the traditional drinks and
snacks,’’ said PHS Principal Lloyd
Shaddix. “To achieve this end, we
have over the past two weeks
restocked our vending machines
with water only, until the committee
could make a decision with Coke,
Pepsi, and our other vendors about
the types of foods we want to make
available. After our spring break,
the students will find several new
choices in the vending machines,
which we feel model more effec
tively our concern for their health
and well-being.’’
Students in Marcia Bonner’s two
10th grade classes were subjects in
Coca-Cola’s taste test on Friday,
conducted by Mickey Stancil,
Account Manager for the Jasper
office.
After seeing an informative
video concerning smart dietary
choices coupled with exercise for
optimum health, the students were
invited to taste four new products:
MinuteMaid Lite drinks Mango
Tropical, Guava Citrus, Lemonade,
and Raspberry Passion.
The students then “reported out”
by ranking the flavors on a 1 to 10
scale on Mrs. Bonner’s tally sheet,
who used her grading program to
quickly run an analysis of their
opinions. The students found that
there was no clear favorite, with
both Mango and Raspberry last in
one class but first in the other.
Guava and Lemonade also swapped
places between the two classes.
Mrs. Bonner stated, “That just
shows that we need all four of the
flavors, since our students like dif
ferent tastes. I’m proud of our stu
dents for taking the change in their
snacks so well, and I applaud Mr.
Shaddix and the committee for
reaching this important decision for
the benefit of our students.”

Several residents have been
working on collecting data on Nel
son’s history. They are seeking
information pertaining to the early
residents, the early schools, church
es, old homes, roads, marble mill
employees (Blue Ridge and Georgia
Marble) and other occupations, old
photos and deeds. Information on
Nelson people who have served in
the military, especially their awards
and decorations, are needed. We
also would like information about
Indian settlements in this area. This
data will be stored at Nelson City
Hall for the City of Nelson Museum
and available to the public.
If you are interested in helping,
please come to a meeting at Nelson
City Hall Thursday, April 15. Meet
ing begins at 7 p.m. All work is vol
untary. We need your ideas and sug
gestions as well as your help in
obtaining and recording to make
this effort a success.
Also, on Saturday, April 17 at
Nelson City Hall, we will have
scanners set up to make copies of
old photos or other items. Search
out any photos and join us on the
17th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We
will copy your original and you will
be able to take your original back
home with you.
