Mountainside Medical’s “Done Well” Award
By Thelma Dunn, RN,C, BSN
Staff Nurse in the Women’s Cen
ter
Every minute of every day at
Mountainside Medical Center there
are opportunities to be nominated
for the “Done Well” Award.
In whatever area that we work
we try to be the best that we can be.
The “Done Well” Award is new to
us at Mountainside Medical and we
wanted to tell you about it.
This past week we had an event
occur in the Women’s Center. You
probably saw Erlanger’s Life-Force
helicopter parked on our helipad
located outside of the ER.
In the morning we admitted a
preterm pregnant woman who was
at great risk for losing her baby.
She could not be transported by
ambulance to the Atlanta hospitals
because her labor was proceeding at
a rapid pace. When we knew we
were going to deliver a preterm
infant we called Erlanger’s Life-
Force transport team to take the
baby and mother if necessary to a
Chattanooga Hospital. They arrived
and assisted our staff in stabilizing
the infant and prepared to transport
him to T. C. Thompson Children’s
Hospital (a part of Erlanger system)
in Chattanooga, TN. The mother
could recover here at Mountainside
Medical Center and did not need to
be transported, but they had a team
ready for the baby and mom.
The baby is doing well because
of the actions that were taken here
at the hospital. The staff at Moun
tainside Medical Center and the
Erlanger transport team worked
side by side on this infant. Howev
er, credit does not go to us alone.

All along the way our health infor
mation is recorded from the moth
er’s first visit to the clinic. This
information was retrieved quickly
once the mother signed her permis
sion slips. Our patient initially
arrived at our sister hospital’s emer
gency department at North Georgia
Medical Center. The emergency
room physician called Dr. Herrald
(OB-GYN) and a transfer went into
process. The ambulance personnel
transported her to Mountainside
Medical Center in a speedy manner.
The emergency department was
directed to bring her up to the
Women’s Center immediately. The
labor nurse began addressing her
needs for lab work, IV access, mon
itoring the mother’s labor, adminis
tering fluids, monitoring the baby’s
heart rate and administering med
ication. The maintenance staff
helped with traffic control when the
helicopter landed and lifted off.
The medical-surgical unit staff
helped us as much as we needed.
First and foremost we thank
God! The outcome could have been
very different. God made that little
boy and the nurses caring for him
say he is quite a fighter. Secondly,
we thank Erlanger’s Life-Force
transport team for their expertise,
help and quick arrival. We also want
to thank the community for having
faith in staff at Mountainside Med
ical Center and allowing us to help
you with your healthcare needs.

A large package containing sev
eral hundred drawings made by
Jasper Elementary School students
is on its way to an elementary
school in Teraina, Albania. Each of
the drawings will be given to an
Albanian student of an equivalent
age who will be allowed to take the
drawing home. This exchange
begins with a global friendship.
Giada Kuka and Elaina McTaggert
met in Washington DC last Sep
tember at the International Child
Art Festival. Elaina represented
Georgia and Giada Albania. Elaina
was accompanied by her art
teacher, Kathleen Thompson, while
Giada came with her mother who
works in an art gallery. Together
with Elaina’s mother Regina, the
group decided that it would be
good to exchange art.
Giada is very mature and her
English is quite good as seen in
this letter, noted Dr. Thompson:
Dear Mrs. Kathy,
We have made our artworks and
I am so glad to tell you that we are
sending them soon. I want this to be
a really nice relationship and friend
ship also between our schools.
Schools there in USA are very dif
ferent from our schools here. You
have a lot of beautiful and good
schools with very nice conditions
that are only a dream for we chil
dren here in Albania. But, I think
that friendship is something more
than appearance. It is something
that comes deeply from our hearts.
That is why we all are very happy
that we are sending our artworks as
gifts to your school. Not all of us
speak English but we think art is the
best language of the children. I hope
we all are going to be good friends
4ever. Giada.
In their drawings for the children
of Albania, art teacher Kathleen
Thompson asked the students to
portray what it is like to be an
American child. She explained that
children around the world see our
television programs, movies and
video games but are unaware of
what the everyday life of real chil
dren is like in the USA. As a result,
the JES students showed themselves
playing with their friends and fami
lies.
Giada Kuka and Elaina
McTaggert met at the Interna
tional Child Art Festival in
Washington, D.C. during Sep
tember 2003. Since then they
have returned home and corre
sponded. As a result of this
friendship, students at Jasper
Elementary School and Giada’s
school in Albania will be
exchanging art.
Tate PTO Meeting
Tate Elementary PTO will meet
Tuesday, April 20 at the auditorium,
6:30 p.m. The Tate Elementary
Chorus will perform and student art
will be on display. Please come and
support our school. Everyone wel
come.
