Persistent 4-year-old prevents fire
at Jasper shopping center
By Meghan Lee
Kassie Dean, age 4, prevented
what could have been a large fire,
according to the Fire Department.
Kassie alerted her mother, Telina
Dean, a firefighter for Cherokee
County, about a fire that had broken
out in a shopping cart behind the
Family Dollar, beside the Piggly
Wiggly.
Her mother was washing the
dishes in their nearby residence
when Kassie came into the kitchen
and said she wanted to show her
something.
Telina Dean told her that she was
busy, but would come in a minute.
Little Kassie Dean remained per
sistent.
When asked what it was she
wanted to show, she simply said it
was a surprise. Her mother gave in
and followed her daughter to the
window. Kassie pointed outside
where a fire had started in a shop
ping cart. The fire was near a gas
line and could have caused substan
tial damage, the Fire Department
said.
Last Thursday local firefighters
thanked Kassie Dean for her help.

4-Hers show skills
at District Project
Achievement competition
(l-r) C.J. Fellows, Bob Jasperse, Rachel Wigington, Molly Jones,
courtney Ingram, and Teen Leader, mary Alic Jasperse.
On Saturday, April 3, a group of
five Cloverleaf 4-Hers, made up of
5th and 6th graders from Pickens
County, competed in the District
Project Achievement competition
in Banks County. These students
spent many hours preparing for this
competition against other counties
within the Northeast District. Stu
dents selected a project area,
researched their subject, prepared a
five minute speech and made
posters that supported the speech.
At the competition, they exercised
their public speaking skills by
delivering their speeches before
peers and judges.
These students included C.J. Fel
lows, Flowers, Shrubs and Lawns;
Bob Jasperse, Landscape Design;
and Molly Jones, Marine and
Coastal Ecology. Two of the stu
dents who competed took a differ
ent route. Courtney Ingram compet
ed in the Fashion Revue Project, in
which she was required to sew, then
model a skirt. Also, Rachel Wiging
ton showed off her talent in the very
competitive category of Performing
Arts-Instrumental, in which she
played the piano.
Of the five students who com
peted, each received a first place
award! Add these awards to the
eight first place awards received
recently at the Junior/Senior DPA
competition back in March, and
that’s what we call success! We are
so proud of these results. We are
encouraged by these students’ com
mitment to the 4-H program and
certainly look forward to their par
ticipation in the future. We invite all
Pickens County students to become
a member of this fast-growing,
highly recognized program.
We still have space available at
the very popular 4-H Summer
Camp at Rock Eagle. This camp is
for 5th and 6th grade students. Pick
ens County students will attend
camp this year June 7-11. You don’t
want to miss out on this fun! For
more information, or to register,
please call 706-253-8840, or stop
by the Depot.
