Farmers Market opens 2004 season Saturday
Well folks it’s finally here...time for the 2004
season of the Jasper Farmers Market to begin.
This Saturday, April 17th the market will kick off
with a great selection of annuals, herbs, perenni
als, shrubs, honey, spring greens and wonderful
homemade goodies. There will also be lots of
unique handmade crafts from local artists.
Come out for a beautiful day at the Park &
Ride lot off Hwy 53 near Newton Park, that’s
where you’ll find friendly local vendors set up
selling their homemade and homegrown items.
If you have never been to the Jasper Farmers
Market before then you’re in for a treat! You’re
guaranteed to meet lots of super people and find
the perfect plant for your yard, a one of a kind
handcrafted chair for your patio, or a piece of
mouth-watering cake to take home and savor
later in the day.
With Earth Day coming up next week, what
better way to celebrate than by supporting your
local farmers and crafters right here in your own
hometown? Be on the lookout for the Sunflower
Man, he’ll be hanging out nearby and you won’t
want to miss him!
Entertainment will be provided by Don and
Darlene Lodge, who will be playing some great
old-timey favorites on the accordion along with
rhythm and percussion. This promises to be an
enjoyable day for everyone, so please come out
and join us and let’s kick off the 2004 market
season with a bang.
Together with the support of the community
this can be the largest and most successful season
yet.
The Jasper Farmers Market will be held each
Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon in the Park &
Ride Lot and is sponsored by the Pickens County
Master Gardeners. For more information please
visit our website at www.pickensmg.com or call

Q: If a Wood Infestation Inspec
tion Report has been issued on a
house, can I assume that it is struc
turally sound?
A: No, and in this situation,
assumptions can be costly. A wood-
destroying organism inspector is not
ordinarily a construction or building
trade expert and is therefore not
expected to assess structural sound
ness. A qualified inspector in the
building trade, who is approved by
you and the lending agency, should
perform evaluation and correction
of damage that may have resulted
from an active or previous infesta
tion.
• ••••
Q: What is a Georgia Wood
Infestation Inspection Report?
A: Banks or other lending insti
tutions require this report, which is
commonly referred to as a “clear
ance letter” for transfers or real
property. It certifies that a structure
has been inspected and is apparently
free from wood-destroying organ
isms. However, this inspection is
required to be performed only in
those areas which were readily
accessible. Inaccessible areas not
inspected include, but are not limit
ed to, areas obstructed by floor cov
erings, wall coverings, siding, fixed
ceilings, insulation, furniture, appli
ances or other personal items.
Q: When I bought my newhouse,
at the closing my attorney gave me
the termite warranty and stated that
the builder would complete the
backfill on the property soon. We
moved in two weeks after the clos
ing and the backfill was done the
same day. We have not seen our ter
mite company. How long do they
have after the backfill to complete
the termite treatment? We have been
living in our new home for about
two months.
A: State law requires the final
termiticide application on new con
structions or pre-treatments to be
completed within 90 days of actual
occupancy of the structure by the
owner; the closing of a permanent
loan on the structure; the comple
tion of backfilling by the building
contractor or owner; or the issuance
of a local “certificate of occupan
cy,” whichever occurs first. The
countdown on your exterminating
company started on the day you
closed on this property. By our cal
culations, the company has less than
two weeks to do your treatment.
Q: I’ve found wood-destroying
fungus in the attic bathroom and in
the mother-in-law suite over the
garage of the house I just bought. I
was given an inspection report at
closing that indicated there were no
problems with wood-decaying fun
gus in this structure. Will my pest
control company take care of this
problem at no cost?
A: No. The wood-destroying
fungi on inspection reports cover
only occurrences that happen below
the first floor level and are the result
of moisture conditions that can be
corrected with moisture barriers and
increased ventilation. Fungus result
ing from roof or plumbing leaks or
improper drainage of surface water
is not covered by the Georgia Wood
Infestation Inspection Reports.
