Talking Rock awarded grant for city park
Governor Sonny Perdue
announced recently that the City of
Talking Rock has been awarded a
grant of $36,900 for the expansion
of City Park. According to Georgia
Department of Natural Resources
Commissioner Lonice C. Barrett,
the funds for this grant are from the
federal Land and Water Conserva
tion Fund provided through the
National Park Service and adminis
tered by the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources. A total of 69
grant applications totaling over $5
million in requests were received
making competition tight for the
$2.2 million allotment.
The $36,900 grant will be used
to acquire and develop property
adjacent to City Park. The City of
Talking Rock is located in Pickens
County. Representing Pickens
County in the General Assembly are
Senators Casey Cagle and Bill
Stephens and Representative Jeff
Lewis.
Cub Pack explores adventure underground
During the weekend of March
27-28, Tate Elementary Cub Scout
Pack 536 took an adventure of a
lifetime. The trip consisted of 21
Scouts along with 25 parents and
siblings.
The adventure started early on
Saturday morning with a 17-car
scamper to Chickamauga Military
Battlefield Park. Once we arrived,
the boys had a picnic lunch around
one of the monuments depicting
action of the Civil War era. With a
short break, the boys set out for a
two-mile hike which took them to
several battlefields and an awesome
sight of artillery cannons. Their next
destination was the sight of General
Braxton Braggs Headquarters dur
ing the Battle of Chickamauga.
With a few steps remaining in their
hike, the boys took advantage of the
park’s main office with a display of
Civil War memorabilia.
The next part of the great adven
ture was a tricky drive through
Chattanooga and across Mount
Eagle to a little town of McMin
nville, Tn. Just on the outskirts of
town we landed on the side of a
mountain called Cumberland Cav
erns. This cave dates back to the
early 1800s for cave exploration and
the mining of Saltpeter, which is
used in gun powder. These brave
Scouts loaded up all of their gear to
camp approximately 500 feet under
ground. Once inside the cave, the
temperature dropped to 56 degrees.
Soon after we arrived at our
campsite (Ten Acre Room), inside
the cave all participants had to pass
the test of “The Box.’’ The box was
a simulation test of the smallest hole
(11 inches in height) that the boys
would try to pass through. Just ask
some of the parents who did not
pass the test. Needless to say, all the
boys passed with “Slim Measures.”
Without six of our parents, the
remaining adults along with our
courageous guide took the “Gypsum
Crawl” spelunking tour of the cave.
We entered the Devil’s Quarry area
and quickly laid flat on our stom
achs and began to crawl through a
tight area known as Lemon squeezer
then to Devil’s Backbone. All of the
adults soon realized why the box
was so important when we hit Fat
Man’s Squeeze. The next part was
probably the Scouts stickiest situa
tion yet, just ask Jordan C. about his
flashlight. This section of the cave
was the famous “Bubble Gum
Alley.” Believe me, I never knew
how sticky mud could be. Shoes
would actually come off the kids’
feet.
After rejoining the rest of the
group, we all took the commercial
part of the tour and discovered how
stalagmites, stalagtites, columns and
flowstone are formed. At the end of
the tour, a lot of the boys tried their
luck at mining for gems. We con
cluded our evening with a late night
ghost story then bedded down for an
unforgettable night under the moun
tain dome.
The next morning we woke up to
a quick breakfast before our long
journey back to Pickens. This was
truly a trip these young men will
never forget.
