2004 “Art for Heart” Gala will have it all
By Doug Brooks
It is now a well established tradi
tion that once a year we have an
opportunity to attend an evening of
music and entertainment, enjoy
great refreshments and participate
in an auction to raise funds for a
cause that is important to ah of us,
the fight against heart disease and
stroke.
This year’s event will be held
from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, April 24 at
the Chamber of Commerce building
and is sponsored by the Pickens
County Division of the American
Heart Association. The “Art for
Heart” Gala will include a silent
and live auction of outstanding
works of art donated by local artists,
great music for listening and danc
ing by Swing Shift. A wide variety
of scrumptious hors d’oeuvres will
again be provided by the presenting
sponsors Joe and Brenda Rueffert
and the Woodbridge Inn. This year’s
theme is “Go Red For Women” and
women are encouraged to wear red.
Additional art work is needed
and donors are asked to take their
donations to Elaine Carver at Jasper
Banking Co. Items can include orig
inal works, prints, mixed media,
pottery and sculpture. Donations are
tax deductible.
To be successful, a live auction
requires three things: outstanding
items to be auctioned, individuals to
bid on the items and a talented and
live auctioneer. Tom Lindsey will
fill the bill as auctioneer again this
year and we are assured of a lively
and successful auction.
Tickets for the Gala are $40 each
and are available at Century 21 -
Best Mountain Properties, Marble
Hill; Century 21 - Lindsey &
Pauley; Crescent Bank; Jasper
Banking Co.; Jasper Drug Store;
and the Pickens Progress.
A special event this year will be
a tribute to Earl Brinson, long-time
local supporter of the work of the
American Heart Association.
Lunds raised by the event will go
to the American Heart Association’s
continuing fight against heart dis
ease and stroke. Statistics from
AHA indicate that cardiovascular
disease (CVD) remains America’s
No. 1 killer, still claiming more
lives than the rest of the major caus
es of death. Cardiovascular diseases
include high blood pressure, coro
nary heart disease (heart attack and
angina), congestive heart failure,
stroke and congenital heart defects.
Coronary heart disease alone is the
single largest killer of Americans.
The disease continues to devastate
women as it accounts for one in five
women’s deaths. CVD is the No. 3
cause of death for children under
age 15. Stroke is the third leading
cause of death in this country each
year.
Melinda Edwards (692-5057) is
president of the local chapter and
Deborah Goodrum (692-2141) is
the Gala chair. They encourage your
participation in this very important
event and will be happy to answer
any questions.

It is easy for everyone around
me to tell when I am overwhelmed
and over committed. My absent
mindedness advances to the critical
stage.
Yesterday when I fed my dog I
was in a mad dash to get some
where. As I plunked the food in the
pan, I saw that I had given the dog
the cats’ food. The dog immediately
realized it too.
My dog’s expression was price
less. She had that bemused look
where her top lip is stuck on one
side to her upper gums. Her snout
was crinkled like she had smelled
something bad. Her mind was easy
to read as she cocked her head to
the side and looked furtively into
my eyes.
“Just who does she think I am?

Oh no, it’s the ultimate insult! She
thinks I’m a cat.”
I apologized profusely to my
dog, and minutes later rushed out
the door. With car keys in hand I
turned to face the back door. In a
frenzied effort to lock my home, I
mashed furiously on the car remote
control. Maybe the batteries were
dead in the dam thing. For at least
15 seconds I persevered at the task,
wondering why I wasn’t hearing
the click of the door lock. Then,
coming to my senses, I glanced
around to see if anyone was watch
ing.
My audience was at my feet.
Both my cats were sitting quietly
staring up at me. Their minds were
easy to read too.... “The poor
woman has finally and completely
lost it.”
Time to Take
My Own Advice?
I have spent this school year
writing to you about various
aspects of parenting. At the top of
that list is the importance of putting
family needs first. It is pretty obvi
ous that it is time for me to listen to
my own advice.
A few days ago the McIntyre
Clan held a family meeting and
decided Mom needed to focus on
the family. They gave me my ulti
matum: No more staying up until 2
a.m. writing articles for the paper
about parenting until I could prove
that I was still capable of being a
competent parent.
Several articles, which I look
forward to sharing with you, are in
the works. However, instead of
making the every week deadline I
will concentrate on a few topics
and spend some valuable time with
my own children.
I invite you to join me in letting
go of a few out-of-the-family com
mitments if you possibly can. As
school winds down, our children
need us to help them have a strong
finish. Special parental attention
now to homework being done, proj
ects getting completed, and sched
ules being kept can make a big dif
ference in how our children’s final
report cards look.
Here’s advice that I am taking
also; Make our children’s needs a
top priority. With six weeks of
school left, let’s give them all the
encouragement we can to support
their best performance. The details
of this year will be long forgotten,
but the overall experience of suc
cess or failure will impact their
self-concepts for many years to
come.
My pets are curled up nearby
snoozing. My dog is doing that
twitching thing, undoubtedly
dreaming that she is in hot pursuit
of a renegade squirrel that has ven
tured into her territory. My children
and husband are soundly sleeping.
So, it must be time for lights out for
me too.
Let me hear from you:
