Habitat announces new application opportunity
This week I’m just gonna give
ya’ll the short version answer for
frequently asked questions.
How do I keep my dog from
chasing the neighbor’s cat? You
can’t. That must be a really stupid
cat to get inside of your fence. In
fact, even with a lot of training
there are just some instances where
us canines loose our rational mode
of thinking, let instinct have con
trol, and rush after whatever entity
strikes us as needing a good chas
ing.
My dog is scratching and
scratching. What is wrong? That
could be a variety of things. First
thing comes to my mind is fleas.
The next is skin infection and aller
gic reaction. Mange can also make
us itch like crazy. You can inspect
your dog for fleas and then admin
ister a flea control treatment. You
need to take a ride to the vet to get
a diagnosis and treatment for the
others.
How do I get my dog from raid
ing the litter box? Don’t give him
or her access to it. Some of us just
love them tootsie rolls and eat them
like candy. Different strokes for
different folks. In fact we often find
horse and cow poop irresistible too.
Not to mention roadkill. We like
roadkill la perfume also.
How do I get my dog to come
when I call her? Stop punishing
her by putting her up, out, in a crate
or fence or whatever else is
unpleasant every time she comes.
Instead reward her every time she
comes. Call her just to reward her
some of the time. Call her when
you feed her even if she’s standing
right there. Then she will think "Oh
Habitat for Humanity-Pickens
County is announcing the opening
of the application process in May.
Applicants who want to become
Partners with Habitat for Humanity
and ultimately homeowners are
invited to attend one of two meet
ings at Walker Hall of the Jasper
First Baptist Church. The meeting
will be on Thursday, May 13 at 7
p.m. and Saturday, May 15 at 9:30
a.m. Applicants must attend one of
these meetings to qualify for a
house. No phone or mail applica
tions will be accepted.
Habitat for Humanity is a Christ
ian housing ministry that builds
and/or remodels houses and sells to
God’s people in need. The houses
are sold with no profit and no inter
est on the loan. The selection
process is expected to be completed
in September or October of this
year for a house that will be built on
Twin Oaks Trace in Jasper. The
completion of the house is antici
pated in the first quarter of 2005.
If you would like to get
involved, either as an applicant or a
volunteer worker, please give us a
call at 253-2393. As always, your
tax-free donations to help pay the
cost of site preparation, building
materials and land purchases are
welcome. Please mail them to Habi

goody" instead of "Oh ...unprint
able" when you call her name. You
can still do those things she doesn’t
particularly like, but now they won’t
seem so awful. Think about it, if
your boss only wants to talk to you
when you’re in trouble how would
you feel? Unh huh, thought you
might relate to that.
How do I housebreak my puppy?
Don’t expect a lot out of a young
puppy. Put the puppy on a schedule
so that you anticipate when puppy
needs to pee. Take him out every
two hours if possible. Take him out
ever time he wakes up. Take him out
after every meal. That ends up being
about every two hours. Be consis
tent. Reward him when he goes. You
can even use food reward here.
Don’t lock him in a crate for more
than 4-6 hours.
Some puppies housebreak at 3
months, some toy dogs don’t com
pletely get it till they are 9 months
to a year. At least they have toy
sized bladders.
How do I keep my dog from chas
ing cars? See “How do I keep my
dog from chasing the neighbor’s
cat?” And car chasing is a guarding
behavior - we’re just doing our job.
And what do I have to do to get you
all to hear the word FENCE.
My assistant is back to doing
FREE TELEPHONE CONSULTA
TION on animal behavior problems.
So feel free to call her. She also will
do private behavioral assessments
but you have to pay her for that. She
may not get back to you immediate
ly. Don’t feel afraid to call repeated
ly. I think she maybe might need her
own assistant. Oh, yea, I see her
nodding her head at that one.
Till next time

for bad knees.
Free Seminar: Exciting news in knee replacements. Tuesday 4/27, 7-8pm.
If you have arthritis of the knee, you may think total
knee replacement is the only solution. Now there’s a less
drastic alternative for many knee pain sufferers: “Mini
Knee” replacement. It involves replacing only the damaged
part of the knee while letting the healthy bone remain. Its
minimally-invasive technology means smaller incisions
and a faster recovery. Learn
all about this and other
options for knee pain from
