Nelson council looks at DUI issues
and need for more junk car cleanup
By Meghan Lee
The Nelson City Council dis
cussed topics ranging from DUIs to
junked cars during their April meet
ing Monday.
Among the topics debated and
decided upon were a suggestion for
DUI offenders, junk cars, the place
ment of a fire engine in town and
the approval of a yearly payment of
$ 1,000 to the volunteer fire depart
ments in Tate and Ball Ground.
The first topic discussed dealt
with first and second-time DUI
offenders. The idea was that these
offenders would be asked to attend
Several residents have been
working on collecting data on Nel
son’s history. They are seeking
information pertaining to the early
residents, the early schools, church
es, old homes, roads, marble mill
employees (Blue Ridge and Georgia
Marble) and other occupations, old
photos and deeds. Information on
Nelson people who have served in
the military, especially their awards
and decorations, are needed. We

MADD (Mothers Against Destruc
tive Decisions).
"We will urge the judge to do
this," Eric Wilmarth explained
about the idea. All but one of the
Council members were in favor of
this new program. Wilmarth said
that studies have shown that the
panel helped prevent first and sec
ond time DUI offenders from driv
ing under the influence again.
The next topic discussed was a
frequent issue in the city of Nelson:
"Junk cars."
The Clean Up Day in Nelson did
also would like information about
Indian settlements in this area. This
data will be stored at Nelson City
Hall for the City of Nelson Museum
and available to the public.
If you are interested in helping,
please come to a meeting at Nelson
City Hall Thursday, April 15. Meet
ing begins at 7 p.m. All work is vol

these junk cars. The Council agreed
that they need to be removed, but
no plans were finalized.
Also discussed was whether to
suspend a local resident's business
license for failing to comply with
city regulations. Upon approval of
the city attorney, the business
license of the resident will be
revoked, Wilmarth said.
Also on the agenda was the
approval of the annual payment of
$1,000 to the Volunteer Fire Depart
ments in Tate and Ball Ground. A
fire engine will be housed in Nelson
obtaining and recording to make
this effort a success.
Also, on Saturday, April 17 at
Nelson City Hall, we will have
scanners set up to make copies of
old photos or other items. Search
out any photos and join us on the
17th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We
will copy your original and you will
be able to take your original back
home with you.
for use by the firemen; however,
there will not be an actual fire
department in Nelson. The Council
approved both of these motions.
The Nelson City Council meets
the first Monday of every month in
the Nelson City Hall.
