PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS THURSDAY. APRIL 15. 2004
southern NATIVE American
The first Native Americans to come to this continent crossed a frozen land bridge from Asia to North America. This was between 100,000B.C. and
,000B.C. during the Ice Age. These tribes followed the animals they hunted for food to the southern section of the continent during the second Ice Age. By the
Time the first Spanish explorers arrived in 1513, more Indians were living in the South than in any other part of the continent except Mexico. They had been
attracted to the area because of the favorable living conditions and rich soil for farming. Some of the first Southerners we know about lived in the Paleo-Indian
period. This was about 12,000 years ago. They hunted large animals such as the mammoth. These were prehistoric elephant-like animals. 700A.D. was the
Woodland Period. The southern Native Americans did not run into many buffalo in this part of the country so by this time they were hunting smaller game. The
weapons had become smaller and more accurate. With tools such as these, they could hunt rabbit, deer, fox, squirrel, birds, etc.
These early tribes used hand made tools for hunting. They did not have refrigerators to keep food fresh so they had to kill daily for food. In the earliest
days, the hunters used pointed sticks to kill. Then they learned to tie carved pointed stones to the end of their sticks. Eventually an invention we all know made
its way to eastern North America - the bow and arrow. You may have even found some of these hand carved arrowheads in your area.
Tribal life was very different from anything any white man had ever seen before. The basis of tribal life was family and clan. Clan membership was the most
important alliance in a southern Native American’s life. Spiritual beliefs and respect for the land were also important and was intertwined into daily life. White men
that watched the religious ceremonies did not understand the Native Americans’ belief and began to convert them to their own religion. However, the white men
did not realize that everyday practices expressed their belief and it would soon be the loss of a civilization.
The first explorers did not understand the tribal way of sharing the land. A very famous Native American, Tecumseh, said he could no more sell the land
than he could sell the air or the sea. He believed that no man could own the land. Sadly, land hungry settlers pushed the Native Americans west so they could settle
the land themselves. T oday this same land has suffered because we have ignored the ways of these ancient tribes in regards to caring for our land. They were wise
to treasure the land as a gift and we could do well to learn the same.
A clan was a group of people who were
related through the mother’s side of the
lineage. A clan was sometimes named for an
animal or a totem. The totems were a sort of
spirit guide that was represented by an
animal. When totem poles were carved and
displayed, this was representative of all the
totems that had come together.

, , See if you can guess how Native Americans used the items below.
The “peace pipe” was a spiritual tool. Native
Americans believed that tobacco was a gift from the spirit j
world. They smoked it to ward off evil spirits, to curb
appetites and cure infection. They also smoked it with former
enemies which represented a peace treaty. That’s how the
pipe got its name.
