Obituaries
Madeline Prather
Mrs. Madeline H. Prather, age
91 of Jasper, passed away April 12,
2004 at the Blue Ridge Health Care
in Fannin County.
Survivors include nieces and
nephews.
The funeral service was held at
2 p.m. Thursday, April 15 from
Roper Funeral Home Chapel with
the Revs. Max Caylor and Herb
Flanders officiating. The interment
followed in the Jasper City Ceme
tery.
Bertie Ryder
Mrs. Bertie Ora Belle Norton
Ryder, age 89 of Jasper, passed
away April 11, 2004 at Mountain
side Medical Center. She was pre
ceded in death by her husband, J. T.
“Jake” Ryder; and sons, Wayne and
Larry Ryder.
Survivors include her sons,
Tommy Ryder of Marble Hill, and
Terry Ryder of New Egypt, N.J.;
daughter, June Gilbert of Jasper.
Twelve grandchildren and 16 great
grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at
4 p.m. Wednesday, April 14 from
Roper Funeral Home Chapel with
the Rev. Keith Cook officiating.
Interment followed in Cool Springs
Baptist Church Cemetery. The fol
lowing served as pallbearers: Doug
Ryder, Gabe Duckett, Billy Gilbert,
John Gerrard, Scott and Russell
Pendley.
John Blackwell
Mr. John Hyman “J. H.” Black-
well, age 60 of Ball Ground, passed
away April 15, 2004 at Northside
Hospital Cherokee. He was preced
ed in death by his father, Harold
Blackwell; sister, Doris Kent; and
brother, Wesley Blackwell.
Survivors include his sons, Ron
nie Lathem, Dennis and Michael
Ponders, Jeff and Jeremy Black-
well; daughter, Angie Ponders;
mother, Edith Blackwell; brothers,
Wayne, Ronald and Kevin Black-
well; sisters, Debra and Eddie
Jones, Trudy Totherow, Francis
Smith, Tammy and Dawn Black-
well. Three grandchildren and sev
eral nieces and nephews also sur
vive.
The funeral service was held at
2 p.m. Sunday, April 18 from Mt.
Vernon Baptist Church with the
Revs. Gene Hyde, Bobby Trammell
and Frank Lathery officiating.
Interment followed in the church
cemetery. The following served as
pallbearers: Danny Darby, Randall
Fowler, Keith Brown, Curtis
Elliott, Brannon Smith and Scotty
Blackwell. Honorary pallbearers
were: Justin Jones and Jody Bell.
Roper Funeral Home was in charge
of the arrangements.
Cayce Woodward
Mr. Cayce Eugene Woodward,
age 34 Fairmount, passed away
Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at his resi
dence.
Mr. Woodward was bom August
11, 1969 in Fulton County, son of
Paul Eugene and Patsy Ruth
Townsend Woodward. During his
lifetime, he was an avid hunter, an
employer of N.J. Wilbanks Con
struction co. and was of the Baptist
faith.
Survivors include one daughter,
Jessica Woodward, Jasper; parents,
Paul and Janice Woodward and
Patsy Woodward and Eddie Bryant;
brother, Jonathan Woodward of
Fairmount; grandparent, Wyolene
Townsend of Fairmount; step-chil
dren, Shannon Silvers, Andrea
Blackman, Anna Marie Parker, Eric
Vaughn Bryant, Charles Parker and
Annie Bryant. Aunts, uncles and
cousins also survive.
The funeral service was held
Friday at 2 p.m. from Salacoa Bap
tist Church with the Rev. Hoyt
Jones officiating. Singing was
arranged by Sally Jones and Debbie
Hamby. Active pallbearers were:
Gary Fowler, Eddie Anderson, Jeff
Turner, Shawn Kittle, Kirk and
Jody Townsend. Honorary pallbear
ers were: N.J. Wilbanks Construc
tion Co. Interment followed in the
Salacoa Baptist Church Cemetery.

J. B. Richards
Mr. J. B. Richards, age 45 of
Ellijay, passed away Monday, April
12, 2004. He was born July 24,
1958 in Pickens County, son of
Bessie Chastain and the late Carl
Richards. He worked in the heat
and air business.
Survivors include his wife,
Vickie Dale Richards of the home;
children, Billy Joe Hagin and
Joseph Brian Richards, both of Elli
jay, Myra Adams and LaMarissa
Mae Baker, both of Dalton; four
grandchildren, Gunner and Kindra
Hagin, Natalie Richards and Justin
Baker; mother, Bessie Richards,
Ellijay; brothers, Kenneth, Lamar
and Darrell Richards, all of Ellijay;
sisters, Marcelle Smith, Talking
Rock, Faye Richards and JoAnn
Jones, both of Ellijay.
The funeral service was held
Tuesday at 5 p.m. from the Chapel
of Bernhardt Funeral Home with
Bro. Ronald Guffey officiating.
Music was by Kim Maxwell. Pall
bearers were: Lendford Dale, Eric
Smith, Lewis Bramlett, Michael
Priest, James Thomas and David
Totherow. Interment was in Flat
Creek Church Cemetery.
Annie Yates
Mrs. Annie Maude Yates, age 75
of Marble Hill, passed away Sun
day evening, April 4, 2004 at Well-
star Kennestone Hospital in Mariet
ta.
Survivors include her husband,
Robert Yates, Marble Hill; son and
daughter-in-law, James and Donna
Mercer, McDonough; daughters
and sons-in-law, Marie and Thomas
Brittain, Sharpsburg, Jean and
James Archer and Patricia and Amy
Yates, all of Marble Hill; sister,
Mrs. Stella Mae Fowler, Atlanta.
Ten grandchildren and six great
grandchildren also survive.

Wednesday, April 7 at 2 p.m. from
Arbor Hill Baptist Church with the
Revs. Phillip Padgett, Sanford
Fountain, Greg Long and Phillip
Ward officiating. Interment fol
lowed in the church cemetery with
Carl, Casey and Terry Duckett,
Phillip Ward, Davey Jones and
Tommy Fowler serving as pallbear
ers. Cagle Funeral Home was in

Homer Howard
Mr. Homer “Fuzz” Howard, age
73 of Jasper, passed away April 16,
2004 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Mary
“Cooter” Howard, Jasper; sons and
daughters-in-law, Johnny Homer
and Karen Howard, Ac worth, Ken
neth Jr. and Connie Howard, Keith
Mickey and Rachael Howard and
Teddy Doyle and Telena Howard,
all of Jasper; daughters and sons-
in-law, Carolyn Louise and Ray
Hazelwood, Cartersville, and Deb
orah Lynn and Harold Tidwell,
Adairsville; brothers, Jack, Ernest,
Clifford, George and Faye, all of
Jasper, Billy and Ben Howard Jr.,
both of Dawson County; sisters,
Stella Mae Mulkey, Dawson Coun
ty, Joann Hayes, Jasper, Jenny Har
mon, Marble Hill, and Lois
Howard Brett, Canton. Twelve
grandchildren and seven great
grandchildren also survive.

Monday, April 19 at 11 a.m. from
the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home
with the Rev. Ben Howard Jr. offi
ciating. Interment was in Lake For
est Memorial Park. Pallbearers
were: Jimmy, Terry, Kevin and
Adam Howard, Sean Spratt and
Timothy Hicks.

Gladys Eubanks
Gladys Eubanks of Atlanta
passed away April 11, 2004 at her
residence.
Family, teaching and travel were
the great loves of her life. She
received her BA degree from Geor
gia State College for Women and
an MA in Education from Emory
University. She taught briefly in
Bremen and Marietta before begin
ning an extensive career with the

Atlanta Public School System. Sev
enth grade was her favorite class at
Goldsmith for almost 20 years until
she became principal of Key Ele
mentary in 1962. From 1963 until
1973 she was principal of Lucky
Street Elementary.
Ms. Eubanks then was principal
of Bolton Elementary from which
she retired in 1976 when the school
was closed. At that time, she retired
from the Atlanta system and taught
in a private Morningside school for
five years. Her love of education
and the joys of teaching made her a
valued member of the Alpha Chap
ter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a Soci
ety of Women in Education. After
retirement, Ms. Eubanks continued
her love of travel with trips to
Europe, Egypt, Hong Kong and
Japan. During this time, she lived
with her extended families, the
Kendrick sisters and Sarah Brad
shaw, for whom she supplied lov
ing care until their deaths.
Ms. Eubanks was the daughter
of John Martin and Ella Louvenia
Clark Eubanks, one of 14 children.
Survivors include sisters-in-law,
Bill and Helen Eubanks; 14 nieces;
13 nephews; 56 great-nieces and
nephews; and 53 great-great-nieces
and nephews.

Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 11 a.m.
from Cool Springs Baptist Church
with Dr. Clay Stalnaker and Rev.
Eddie Martin officiating. Interment
followed in the church cemetery
with Ronnie, Mark, Rich, Randy
and Frank Eubanks, Billy Cagle,
Phillip Sperin and Charlie Miller
serving as pallbearers. Flowers
were accepted or contributions may
be made to the Cemetery Fund at
Cool Springs Baptist Church in
Tate. Cagle Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
