A Symbol of Independence
Lions collect
on White
Cane Day
Jasper Lion Allen Wigington was
a young boy when he first became
aware of the special significance of
white canes. Relates Allen, “Grow
ing up in Pickens County, I would
come into town and see two men
that I knew from my church life—
Lawton Baggs and Ed Stephens
wearing yellow vests and standing
at the street corner collecting
money. When you made a contribu
tion they gave you a little white
cane. As I grew up I wanted to learn
more about the yellow-vested men
in the Lions Club and what the little
white canes meant.”
Allen Wigington followed up on
this childhood desire, and he now
serves as chairman of the Jasper
Lions Club’s White Cane Day,
which will be Saturday, April 24.
On that day, Jasper Lions will be all
around the county asking for your
donations. All the funds raised will
be sent to the Georgia Lions Light
house Foundation, Inc., where they
will be used for eye exams, eye sur
geries, eyeglasses, low vision aids,
artificial eyes or hearing aids for
Georgians in financial need.
It was not until the 20th century
that the white cane became a sym
bol to alert people to the fact that
the person using it was visually
impaired. The white canes, which
were shorter than those used today,
were used mostly as identifiers and
not as tools to aid in walking.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s
blind people held their canes diago
nally in a fixed position, thus
enabling others to easily recognize
them.
When blinded veterans of World
War II returned home to the United
States, the shape and use of the
white cane was changed, to help the
veterans become more mobile and
independent. The canes were
lengthened and became a useful tool
while still maintaining their sym
bolic role. With proper training,
visually impaired people enjoy
greater mobility and safety by using
their canes to locate curbs, steps,
uneven pavement, and other obsta
cles in their path.
So when you see a Jasper Lion
collecting for White Cane Day on
Saturday, April 24, be generous.
You will help to make life brighter
for someone who is visually
impaired.
