Pickup, paint up and plant up
Community effort in full swing during the Great American Cleanup
Several residents of The Oaklands, a private community off Greystone, turned out Saturday morn
ing to clean up their community. April is national cleanup month and Keep Pickens Beautiful is urg
ing all of our comm unities to pickup, paint up and plant up the areas where they live.
Last month the volunteers of KPB’s Adopt A Road Program reported picking up 185 bags (5,550
pounds) of litter from just 12 miles of our counties roadways.
Those who participated in these efforts where, Ruby Dougherty, Episcopal Church, Rambler Fami
ly, Brown Family, Steve Scott, Hand Family, Huff Family, Hale Family, Cudzu Canyon Collectors.
KPB had reports from three newest members of Adopt A Road - Shaw Family, Soulia Family and
Tate United Methodist Church. KPB would like to say thank you to all of our volunteers who give up
their time to keep our county a cleaner and greener place to live.

April Clean Up Month Continues
There is still time to get rid of old tires,
junk cars and appliances free
There’s still time to take four scrap tires maximum
per family to the Jones Mountain Landfill before Satur
day April 24, 2004, while they can be disposed of for
free.
Keep Pickens Beautiful would like to remind you
that mosquito breeding season is upon us and with it
brings the West Nile Virus. KPB urges all of our county
residents to dispose of any tires you have lying around.
Let’s eliminate the mosquito breeding places cleanup
our county and protect our environment.
The Great American Cleanup is like a puzzle, if
everyone does a small part in the cleanup the whole big
job will be completed, piece by piece.

Vehicle Roundup
Do you have a junk vehicle you would like to recy
cle into something useful? Keep Pickens Beautiful and
Padgett’s Towing will be picking up junk vehicles the
whole month of April. This pickup campaign is part of
the nation wide Great American Cleanup.

AARP
Driver Safety
The Pickens County Library will
host an AARP Driver Safety course
which will cover how to compensate
for changes in vision, hearing and
reaction time, as well as many chal
lenges of today’s driving problems.
The cost is $10 and covers work
book and materials used. Most driv
ers will more than recover the cost
in automobile insurance discount.
There are no tests, but what is
reviewed will give most of us
insight into our age and driving
habits. The doors will not be open
until 9 a.m. and the course is from 9
a.m. until 1 p.m. each day, May 12-

Ice Cream Eater?
Photo contest
fundraiser to benefit
child abuse program
First Steps/Healthy Families, a
program of Prevent Child Abuse
Pickens, is having their first ever
photo contest fundraiser sponsored
by Conneely Studio. The contest is
open to children between the ages
of 1 to 6 years old.
There is a $10 nonrefundable
reservation fee. The child will have
several photographs made with a
drippy, messy ice cream cone by a
professional photographer -- ice
cream will be provided. You will
choose the pose that will be in the
contest and receive a 5x7 print of
the entry photo. Additional portrait
packages will be available for pur
chase at that time. Photo sessions
are scheduled for June 4 and 5.
The entry photos will be on dis
play at participating locations from
June 21st through July 16th. Peo
ple will be able to vote for North
Georgia’s Messiest Ice Cream Eater
at a cost of $1.00 per vote. All of
this money will go to First
Steps/Healthy Families and is tax
deductible.
The winner will be announced in
the Pickens Progress on July 21st
and will receive a 12x18 framed
watercolor print of the winning
entry from Conneely Studio. Retail

PCMS Band Boosters
meet April 26
The Pickens Co. Middle School
Band Booster Club will meet on
Monday, April 26 at 7 p.m.
The meeting will be held in the
PCMS Bandroom. Parents and band
members are invited to attend the
meeting.
Items to be discussed include:
current fund-raising activities;
schedule items for the PCMS Bands
and for the Band Booster Club for
the balance of this school year,
including future fund-raising activi
ties; and the appointment of a nomi
nating committee to recommend
officers for the 2004/2005 school
year. All PCMS band parents are
urged to attend.
