Beauty or Beast?
It’s all in the eye
of the beholder
This spring drivers on Hwy. 53
West have been enjoying this
massive field of yellow blooms
across from Hill City Elemen
tary.
According to County Agent
Rick Jasperse, the plants are a
species of wild mustard that are
cousins of turnips and several
other greens. If wild mustard is
allowed to go to seed or turnips
are left in the field from the fall
crop, they bolt into their yellow
flowers with the arrival of
spring.
The county agent said that
while the wild mustard puts on
an impressive floral display for
passersby to enjoy, for the
farmer it can become a noxious
weed.
If left uncontrolled, the plants
can become thick enough to
shade out the grass in a hay
field and rob it of nutrients,
resulting in lost production.
While the wildflower display
is attractive, the county agent
suggests that for those farmers
who consider wild mustard to
be a beast, they should mow it
before the yellow flowers go to
seed.

Develop a personal safety plan
Horizon Outreach for Women advises that those in
abusive relationships should be prepared for a crisis
By Debbi Cavender, Coordinator
Did you know that woman bat
tering is the most common but least
reported crime in the US? Statistics
show over 40 percent of the women
murdered in the country are killed
by their husbands or lovers. These
men had beaten those same women
for years.
While living with an abusive
partner, you may think you know
what you will do in a crisis situa
tion. Usually these violent episodes
occur when you least expect them
and are least equipped to handle
them. Terror may cause you to feel
paralyzed. You may be unable to
call for help, gather personal
belongings or your children or even
to grab your purse or car keys. You
may have only a few minutes or
seconds to make vital decisions.
It is important to have emer
gency and safety plans so when vio
lence occurs you will know exactly
what to do. An emergency plan is a
short-term strategy, which maps out
a course of action in a violent crisis.
This is used when you and your
children need to leave a situation
immediately. A safety plan is need
ed for the long-term and consists of
ways to protect yourself and your
children when you are living with
an abuser.
Both kinds of plans should be
prepared in advance. You can work
out a plan yourself or domestic vio
lence advocates can help you put
together a sound plan of action.
This will ensure that you get out of
danger when necessary and help
guarantee your safety after you
leave. It is important to keep your
plan secret. Written plans found by
an abusive partner could endanger
you, your children or anyone who
is helping you.
The first consideration in any
safety plan or crisis situation is the
immediate safety of you and your
children. The checklist below is
part of a simple, basic emergency
plan:
• Call 911 and leave if possible.
• Take your children with you if
possible.
• Seek assistance from law
enforcement before or after exiting
a violent incident.
• Go to a shelter or another safe
location.
• Seek professional advice
regarding a protective order.
The following lists some items
which would be helpful to have
with you in case of an emergency
departure. It may not be possible to
gather these in a time of crisis, but
take as many as you can. These
items may be stored at work, with a
trusted friend or in a locker.
Remember that your safety and that
of your children is the primary con
cern. Documents and other items
are secondary:
• Emergency cash (for motel,
food, etc.).
• Credit cards and checkbooks.
• Driver’s license, registration,
automobile title, etc.
• Prescription medications, eye
glasses, contacts.
• Extra clothing.
• Passports and birth certificates
for you and your children.
• Photograph or photo ID of
your abuser.
It is important to develop and
practice a plan for handling a crisis
or the long-term danger of your sit
uation. Once a violent act takes
place in a relationship, the violence
almost always reoccurs. As time
goes by, the violence tends to get
more severe and occurs more fre
quently. Therefore, it is extremely
important to decide what you will
do in the case of another attack.
You can also use this plan if you
are secretly planning your escape
when your abuser is away from the
home.

INDIAN TRAIL TREES 96 pages Only $12.95
Hundreds of years ago, Native Americans bent Oak saplings

buried their treasure before marching west on The Trail of
Tears. Today, many of these Trail Trees remain, hidden in
woods from the Great Lakes , Missouri, Arkansas, Georgia,
Tennessee, North Carolina and on up the Eastern coast, in
this book, over 100 photos show different types of oddly-
bent "Indian Sign Posts" and their strange "noses." Indian
Trail Trees cannot talk, but their story is told here.
