Kicking off 2004 Relay For Life in Pickens
The time has come to start
preparing for the annual American
Cancer Society Relay For Life
Event in Pickens County. The sea
son will officially begin with the
annual Kick-Off Celebration on
Thursday, April 22 beginning at 6
p.m. at the Pickens County Cham
ber of Commerce community room.
If you are interested in joining
the fight against cancer, you are
invited to attend.
Relay for Life is a fun way to
raise not only money for the Ameri
can Cancer Society, but also to raise
awareness of cancer, cancer sur
vivorship, and the work of the
American Cancer Society.
The Relay for Life concept
involves teams competing against
each other to raise the most money,
show the most spirit, and generate
the most awareness and education
about cancer control and the role
that the American Cancer Society
plays in the fight against cancer.
Anyone can create a team including
businesses, hospitals, civic groups,
churches, and families and friends.
Most teams generally have five to
ten members and a “Captain” as
their leader.
Cancer strikes one out of every
three Americans today. You or
someone you know will likely face
cancer sometime in your life.
The time to get involved is
today. The American Cancer Soci
ety has funded researchers who
have discovered every known tech
nique for treating cancer today. The
American Cancer Society is dedi-

Where were you when the
lights came on in Georgia?
Researchers seek photos, documents, memorabilia,
other items related to the Electrification of state
For most people born after 1950
in Georgia it is hard to imagine life
without electricity, but for many
people born before that date, partic
ularly in rural areas of the state, the
memories of life without electricity
are hard to forget.
No running water, no refrigera
tors, no electric lights inside and
outside, laundry day without a
washing machine, milking cows by
hand, watering crops with buckets
and ditches -- the list is endless.
Even though private electric com
panies provided electricity to towns
and cities around the state of Geor
gia starting in the late 19th century,
these companies found providing
electricity to rural places where
customers were spread out over
large areas to be cost prohibitive.
Consequently, most people liv
ing in rural Georgia couldn't get
electricity until President Franklin
Delano Roosevelt authorized an act
to establish a nationwide program
to help bring electricity to rural
places.
This program was called the
Rural Electrification Administra
tion, or the REA. This landmark
transition in the development of
Georgia into a modern state is the
subject of an upcoming exhibit,
"Power to the People" at the
Richard B. Russell Library, a politi
cal archives and museum at the
University of Georgia in Athens.
The exhibit will open in Febru
ary 2005 and will run through
December 2005.
Currently, the research and cura
torial team at the Russell Library is
conducting a survey across the state
of Georgia to document stories,
photographs, memorabilia and arti
facts, letters, diaries, speeches, and
other paper records that tell the his
tory of rural electrification and its
impact in Georgia.
This information will help the
Russell Library staff identify
objects, images, memories, and
ideas for the REA exhibit, and the
survey will also become an impor
tant information resource for the
IN MEMORY OF LOYD WEAVER
This man was named Weaver, I am glad to share his name
He went by the name of Loyd, Oh how I miss him
To me, the world will never be the same
On April 20, 1999 it was time for him to go
No more worries or burdens,
No longer did he have to carry the load.
Most people called him Loyd, but he was Daddy to me
A more special man, there could never be
He would give you the shirt right off his back and never think twice
To me, that was more than just being nice
A lot of things have changed in these five years
Yes, we all have shed our tears.
Alyssa and Tyler have really grown and Mom is doing OK
Richie & Jody are both fine young men
I know and understand now how you felt about your grandchildren
Joyce helps me with Mom, we check on her every day
I promised you Daddy that I would do this
There could not be any other way.
Rita and Karla are both doing fine, I know they both miss you too
I miss you Daddy, and I love you

Library's archives.
The Russell Library would like
photographs of everyday life both
before and after electricity as well
as images of events and people
directly involved with the coming
of REA and the establishment of
EMCs around Georgia.
In particular, the Library seeks:
• Images of farms and house
holds and activities associated with
each from before and after the com
ing of electricity (kitchenscapes,
farm yards, watering crops, milking
cows, raising chickens, doing laun
dry, cooking, etc.)
• Images of the advertising of
REA and electricity to rural Georgia
consumers (fairs and circuses
where the wonders of electricity
were presented, demonstrations of
electricity by extension agents)
• Images of the construction of
electric lines from the 1930s and
1940s.
The Library also wants docu
ments, diaries, handbills and
posters, artifacts, and memorabilia
of everyday life both before and
after electricity as well as images of
events and people directly involved
with the coming of REA and the
establishment of EMCs around
Georgia.
In particular, the library seeks:
• Examples of early electric
household appliances from the
1930s and 1940s (refrigerator,
washing machine, iron, cook stove);
• Examples of early electric farm
equipment;
• Documents, banners, and mem
orabilia related to the establishment
of Georgia EMCs and the advertis
ing of REA in general
• Examples of early electrical
equipment (wiring, bulbs, plugs, and
outlets;
• Tools used by lineman
• REA badges from utility poles
Centerpieces to this project are
the memories and experiences of
rural Georgians who lived through
this major transition.
To gather these memories the
Russell Library will be conducting
some oral history interviews, and
the staff has developed a series of
questionnaires geared toward cap
turing the specific experiences of
rural Georgians with the coming of
electricity.

exhibit, as well as a detailed list of
items the Russell Library is
