Questions and Answers
Part Two
What kind of shots does my
puppy need?
You really need to consult your
veterinarian about this. But, in gen
eral they need to be vaccinated at 3
weeks for Parvo, Distemper, Aden
ovirus type two, Hepatitis, and Para
influenza. Luckily those vaccines
all come in one shot. I hate shots,
don’t you? Then they need to be
vaccinated every three weeks until
they are 16 to 20 weeks. Your vet
might recommend adding Lep-
tospirosa and Corona. The last set
includes a rabies shot.
What kind of shots does my
kitten need?
Again my advice is consult your
veterinarian. Kitten vaccines are
generally started around 6-8 weeks
of age and are given every 3-4
weeks until 16 weeks of age. Feline
leukemia vaccine is given to those
kittens at risk of exposure. At risk
kittens include those that spend
time outdoors and kittens that live
in multi-cat households. Rabies
vaccination is given at 3-4 months
of age and then one year later.
What can I do to get rid of
fleas?
It’s harder to get rid of em than
keep em away in the first place.
But sometimes you find a place that
is just awful infested and then you
have to really get serious. You can
treat your canine and feline com
panions with a variety of products
designed to kill or repel them banes
to existence but if your house and
yard is full of em, they still gonna
be pesky. Now we used to recom
mend Durban to kill fleas in and
outside the home. But that has been
taken off the market. Still, there are
other concoctions that inhibit the
flea hatching and larval stage.
Meaning them suckers can’t grow
up old enough to reproduce them
selves. You can probably buy these
in garden stores or try www.free-
doityourselfpestcontrol .com.

Insurance Q’s & A’s
Q: My uncle passed away
recently. We think he had a life
insurance policy, but we haven’t
found it. If it turns up later, will
the company still pay the bene
fits?
A: If you find the policy within
six months to a year, you should
have no trouble claiming the bene
fits. To begin your search, go
through the deceased’s cancelled
checks to see if any were made out
to an insurance company. Talk to
his lawyer, banker or accountant to
find out if they know about an
insurance policy. Also, contact his
employer. Even if he had been
retired for years, an employee poli
cy may still be in effect.
If the insured had a term life pol
icy, you’ll receive benefits if he
died before the policy expiration
date. A term life policy offers cov
erage for a specific period, then
expires. It does not generally accrue
a cash value.
Other types of life insurance,
such as whole life, remain in force
for as long as the premiums are
paid, and may begin to build a cash
value after being in force for a few
years. If the deceased kept up the
payments on a whole life policy
until he died, the policy would’ve
been in force at the time of death. If
you discover such a policy after the
date of death — even long afterward
— you would receive benefits, plus
force, though the value of the death
benefit may be substantially
reduced.

The Pickens County Library will
host an AARP Driver Safety course
which will cover how to compen
sate for changes in vision, hearing
and reaction time, as well as many
challenges of today’s driving prob

workbook and materials used. Most
drivers will more than recover the
cost in automobile insurance dis

is reviewed will give most of us
insight into our age and driving
habits. The doors will not be open
until 9 a.m. and the course is from 9
a.m. until 1 p.m. each day, May 12-
13. To register, contact Warren

/ ORTHODONTICS S
WITH A PROMISE
FROM MY HEART TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS
I have been in practice for over 25 years and have promised that if
any one of my many thousands of patients are not happy with their
orthodontic results, I will retreat at no charge to them. This is a
simple promise that tells you that I take the time to obtain optimal
results for each unique patient. My patients wear their retainers
only for a short time and I do not rely on gluing patients’ teeth
together to maintain stability. Only neutral zone orthodontics can
provide this type of quality treatment. Invisalign, functional appli
ances, head gear, and regular braces are only instruments. You
must diligently seek the intentions and get a promise from an
orthodontist of your choice.
If you are ever told that you will need to wear a retainer indefinitely or for life, or are
told that there will be a retainer cemented on your teeth to remain indefinitely then you
are not getting neutral zone orthodontics. BEWARE - When an orthodontist tells you to
wear your retainer indefinitely and you accept this as fact you have taken the responsi
bility of treatment stability from the orthodontist, where it should be, and now accept it
as your responsibility. When your teeth shift and become crooked again, that orthodon
tist is going to say “Well you didn’t wear your retainer like I told you to wear it. It is your
fault the teeth shifted!” When you are told this you must realize that is only a COVER UP
FOR INCOMPLETE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT and in most cases it is not your
fault. Find out these intentions BEFORE you begin orthodontic treatment by asking very
specific questions.
You may receive excellent treatment from an orthodontist who promises you nothing.
However, would you prefer to trust your orthodontics needs to an orthodontist less confi
dent in their routine results or one willing to make a meaningful promise.

If payments were discontinued
and the policy lapsed, you will
probably get nothing. However,
some insurers will switch a whole
life policy to a form of term and use
the cash value to pay for the
extended term policy for a short
period. Other companies may opt to
convert the whole life policy to
“reduced paid up” status, which

Good news
for bad knees.
Free Seminar: Exciting news in knee replacements. Tuesday 4/27, 7-8pm.
If you have arthritis of the knee, you may think total
knee replacement is the only solution. Now there’s a less
drastic alternative for many knee pain sufferers: “Mini
Knee” replacement. It involves replacing only the damaged
part of the knee while letting the healthy bone remain. Its
minimally-invasive technology means smaller incisions
and a faster recovery. Learn
all about this and other
options for knee pain from
