Friends Contribute
Thanks to the generosity of the
“Friends of Pickens Library,” the
young adult section at the Pickens
County Public Library has new
shelves. This section has a large
usage and needed more space.
These new shelves will allow the Habitat for Humanity volunteers at work on the last home completed in Pickens County. The
young adults to have a better selec- p rocess of selecting an applicant for the next house is beginning and to be considered for the Habitat
non o ma eria s. home, those who are interested must attend one of the following application meetings: THURSDAY,
Mother/daughter Tea MAY 13, 7:00 P.M. or SATURDAY, MAY 15, 9:30 A.M. Meetings will be held in Walker Hall, First
The last of the spring storytimes Baptist Church of Jasper.
will be held on April 22. There will
be no storytimes during the month
of May; however, there will be a
mother/daughter tea on Saturday,
May 1 at 2. This activity is limited
to the first 20 participants and there
are few spaces left. Mothers and
daughters will enjoy a wonderful
time discussing books and other
topics that are interesting. This
activity is for ages 6-14.
“Medal of Honor"
The book Medal of Honor by
Peter Collier paints 116 portraits of
men whose incredible bravery in
World War II, Korea, and Vietnam
is the embodiment of the very term
hero. Their lives and their stories,
collected on the pages of this book,
are as diverse as America itself;
They’re black and white and Asian
and Hispanic; sons of sharecroppers
and brothers of soldiers. They’re
17-year-old volunteers, career sol
diers, military academy graduates.
They’re infantrymen and pilots,
flame-thrower men and medics.
They will all tell you they are mere
ly the caretakers of the medal for
their comrades left behind on the
battlefield. They are also living
reminders of the cost of freedom, a
price that we are periodically
required to pay in blood and suffer
ing and courage, as we were so hor
ribly reminded on September 11,
2001, and then later in Iraq.
Habitat for Humanity-Pickens County is announcing
the opening of the application process in May. Appli
cants who want to become Partners with Habitat for
Humanity and ultimately homeowners are invited to
attend one of two meetings at Walker Hall of the Jasper
First Baptist Church. The meeting will be on Thursday,
May 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 15 at 9:30 a.m.
Applicants must attend one of these meetings to qualify
for a house. No phone or mail applications will be
accepted.
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry
that builds and/or remodels houses and sells to God’s
people in need. The houses are sold with no profit and
no interest on the loan. The selection process is expect
ed to be completed in September or October of this year
for a house that will be built on Twin Oaks Trace in
Jasper. The completion of the house is anticipated in the
first quarter of 2005.
If you would like to get involved, either as an appli
cant or a volunteer worker, please give us a call at 253-
2393. As always, your tax-free donations to help pay
the cost of site preparation, building materials and land
purchases are welcome. Please mail them to Habitat for
Humanity-Pickens County, PO Box 1072, Jasper, Ga.
30143.
USDA funds for rural low-income home loans
Income limits for
Funds remain for low income
home buyers through USDA-Rural
Development’s direct home loan
program — and those funds will be
pooled and go to other counties and
possibly other states if they are not
obligated soon.
Remaining funds are for families
who lack adequate housing and who
are in the low income category in
Cherokee, Fannin, Gordon, Gilmer,
Murray and Pickens.
“It is always exciting to be able
to help people buy a home,” said
Gus Purvis, community develop
ment manager in the Jasper office,
which serves these counties. “Our
goal is to provide safe, sanitary and
affordable housing for as many
rural Georgians as possible. We’re
here to help people help them
selves.”
Over 70,000 rural Georgians
have become homeowners under
this program since its inception in
1949. Rural Development currently
has about 14,000 active borrowers
in Georgia. Many more have paid
off those loans or refinanced using
conventional lenders.
“This is a very good opportunity,
because we don’t have anyone wait
ing for these loans,” Purvis said.
“We will process the application
immediately with no waiting. This
program allows us to help people
who have regular incomes and good
credit, but who can’t save a down
payment. We can help people that
otherwise couldn’t get a loan and
who would be trapped renting or
living with relatives.”
Families who have benefited
from USDA-Rural Development’s
housing programs include young
couples, single parents, older citi
zens, people on disability and
minority families, among others.
“The entire community benefits
from increased numbers of home-
owners,” said Stone Workman, state
director. “When people buy a home,
they are making a commitment to
the community, settling down and
paying property taxes. They live
and work in the area and are paying
for local goods and services. It’s a
win-win situation.”
“We encourage anyone who
thinks they might qualify to contact
us in the Jasper office at 706-692-
6417, ext. 4, for more information.
It only takes a few minutes to find
out,” Purvis said.
