Pickens Middle School bands rated superior
The Georgia Music Educators Associa
tion held its annual band performance
evaluation on March 3-5 at Reinhardt
College. A panel of four qualified adjudi
cators rated each bands’ performance on
tone, intonation, technique, balance, inter
pretation, musical effect and sight read
ing. Each judge awarded the PCMS bands
the highest rating of superior. The three
bands from PCMS that participated were
the Sixth Grade Beginning Band, the 7th
and 8th Grade Concert Band and the 7th
and 8th Grade Honor Band. This year
marked the 23rd consecutive year of supe
rior ratings for 6th, 7th and 8th grade
bands in Pickens County. Congratulations
to all band students at PCMS and their
directors, Mary Land and Clara Panta-
zopoulos.

“Golden Moments” at the Canton Theatre
By Doug Brooks
Today it sometimes appears that
television, movies and sports have
taken over the “entertainment”
aspects of our lives. But there is
another resource that has survived
for centuries and is, even now,
readily available — live theatre that
provides a three-dimensional the
atrical experience between per
formers and spectators. No re-takes,
no editing, no close-ups, no long
shots — just continuous action that
tells a story in real time. And if a
performance is in a perfect setting
such as provided by the beautifully
restored 175-seat Canton Theatre,
the audience is drawn even closer
into the drama taking place on the
stage.
An outstanding example of the
beauty and advantages of live the
atre is On Golden Pond by Ernest
Thompson now playing at the Can
ton Theatre. This love story of
Ethel and Norman Thayer finds
them returning to their summer
home on Golden Pond in Maine for
the 44th time. Norman, a retired
professor, nearing 80 with a weak
heart, a failing memory and a grow
ing terror of his death, nevertheless
is still as verbally combative as
ever. Ethel, some 10 years younger
and still young at heart, delights in
the small things at the summer
place and gives Norman real com
petition in their verbal battles.
This summer visit is enlivened
by a visit from their estranged,
divorced middle-aged daughter, her
new dentist fiancee and his teenage
son. A former boyfriend of the
daughter, a postman who delivers
the mail by boat, also appears on
the scene.
Enough on the plot. This is a
comedy and many things are
resolved during this particular sum
mer vacation.
A great cast directed by Jim
Adams (who also plays the mail
man) gives a rich and warm per
formance of this warm and delight
fully moving play. Rich Harpster
and Dave Neace did the set design
and Chuck Polasky provides light
and sound.
Bill Mann brings the cantanker
ous, intelligent Norman to life in a
way that provides just enough of a
delicate balance to let love and a
generous heart shine through. His
agile movements and spirited con
versations keep things moving, but
he is adept at pulling back and shar
ing the stage with others at critical
times. Bill is happy to be returning
to the theatre after an absence of 16
years and favorites among his many
other performances were as Emile
in South Pacific and Asian in Nar
nia.
Barbara McFann is a delight as
Ethel and displays remarkable ver
satility as she moves from light to
serious verbal combat with Norman
to musings on the many small
delights at their summer home. The
ethereal quality of her stage pres
ence no doubt results from her
many dramatic performances in this
area through the years, creative
writing experience and her latest
adventure, leaning to tap dance.
Sherri Taylor, with many theatre
credits in her background, gives a
forceful performance as Chelsea,
bringing out just the right amount
of sympathetic sadness reliving her
childhood with Norman and finally
achieving a sense of reconciliation.
In addition to his fine-tuned
direction of the play, Jim Adams
plays Charlie Martin, the mailman.
With a laugh that could be bottled
and sold as a great pick-me-up, he
bounces in and out of the action.
But he can still pull it down to a
more subdued level as he ponders
on the early years when he was one
of Chelsea’s boyfriends. Since
moving to Georgia from New York
(that’s where that accent comes
from) he has appeared in more than
50 shows.
Will Fowlkes is Chelsea’s den
tist boyfriend. He exhibits great
physical charm, a did-I-get-too-
much laughing gas banter and an
ability to retain something of his
dignity as he becomes a foil for
other cast members. Over the years
Will has appeared in many produc
tions including Daddy Warbucks in
Annie, Frank Gilbreth Sr. in Cheap
er by the Dozen and recently
wrapped up directing two highly
successful musicals in Atlanta --
Oliver! and The Wizard of Oz.
Rounding out the cast, Michael
Gold, an 8th grade student at
Teasley Middle School, plays the
dentist’s son and pretty well takes
over when he is on stage. Energetic
and self-assured, whether teaching
Norman teenage profanity or finally
getting an introduction to some of
the finer things in life during his
stay with them, Michael is a real
find for local theatrical endeavors.
This is what some might call an
old-fashioned drama. It is and
reminds us that gold is a precious
metal, highly malleable and free
from liability to rust. Fortunately,
dramas such as On Golden Pond
are not likely to rust out.
An update on the Canton The
atre: Dave Neace is now managing
director of the theatre staff and
Chuck Polasky is technical director.
