Rep. Tom Graves and John Callaham
address local Republican Party
By by Richard Andersen,
Vice-chairman,
Pickens County Republicans
Rep. Tom Graves, candidate for
state representative in District 12
which includes Pickens County,
and John Callaham, candidate for
our State Senate seat, addressed
Pickens County GOP members and
other interested citizens Thursday,
April 15, at the Media Center of
Jasper Elementary School.
Garland Pinholster introduced
Rep. Graves to the receptive crowd.
Pinholster noted, that prior to redis
tricting, Tom was elected to serve
the people of Gordon County. He
currently is Republican Vice-chair
man of the House Transportation
Committee, and serves on the
Health and Human Services and
Agriculture Committees. Rep.
Graves believes that action on
issues such as tort reform and other
measures passed by the State Sen
ate in this year’s session need to be
completed by the House. Election
of a Republican majority in the
House, one of the State GOP’s pri
mary goals in this year’s elections,
would greatly enhance that
prospect.
Former Rep. Pinholster was
warmly received as residents
expressed their appreciation for his
12 years of untiring service to the
people of Pickens County.
Mr. Callaham outlined his cam
paign issues in a vigorous presenta
tion. He favors elimination of the
income tax by replacement with the
sales tax. He feels that school drop
outs and teenage pregnancies are
serious problems that must be
addressed. From his experience as a
small businessman, he feels that the
tax and health insurance burdens of
small businesses should be low
ered. He said that he is a problem
solver, that he will represent the
whole district, and that voters will
always know where he stands on
issues. His presentation was fol
lowed by several questions from
the large audience.
Kevin Osborne, Chairman of
Pickens County Republicans, said,
“Between now and primary day,
July 20th, our meetings will be
devoted to giving the people of
Pickens County an opportunity to
meet the candidates who want to
represent them for local offices, the
legislature and the U.S. Senate.”
Besides the regular monthly
meetings, there will be three forums
before the primary. A County Can
didate Forum will be held at the
Chamber of Commerce on May 6th
for local GOP candidates beginning
at 7 PM. Each candidate will make
a short presentation and a question
and answer session will follow.

GOP meeting. Tom is running for re-election in the new District
12, which includes Pickens County, with the new redistricting.
John Callaham, candidate for state senate in November, was pres
ent to introduce himself to the crowd of over 60 citizens.
Similar precinct level events will be
held at the Jerusalem Community
Center on June 3rd and at the Big
Canoe Chapel on June 24th. U.S.
Senate candidates, A1 Bartell and
Herman Cain, will attend the June
17th and May 20th meetings,
respectively. Chip Pearson, candi
date for the State Senate seat, will
May 15 proclaimed Health Fair Day
also be speaking at the June 17th
meeting.
The entire community is invited
to a party, Thursday, April 29th,
from 7-9 p.m. at the Fee Newton
Park. This party is to introduce all
qualified Pickens County Republi
can Candidates and to show support
for President Bush. This will be the
first opportunity to meet the Repub
lican candidates after qualifying. It
will be one of almost 3,000 parties
for the President that will occur on
April 29th. Come and meet your
Candidates, and come and show
support for President Bush.
All Pickens County residents are
invited to attend these meetings.
Osborne asked all Republicans who
want to participate in the excitement
of the election process to contact
him at 706-253-7107 or go online to
