PAGE 4A PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS THURSDAY. APRIL 22, 2004
Tour De Georgia rolls through Pickens Sunday
120 Top Pro cyclists
to race on local roads
Residents along highways 53 , 5
and 372 in south Pickens will have
a chance to watch from their front
yards as 120 world class road bik
ers race in the final stage of the
Tour De Georgia this Sunday.
But spectators had better not
look away or they will miss the
unique opportunity to see world
class riders.
“You hear the buildup with heli
copters and sirens and then the rac
ers are by in seconds,” said Joe
Lambert, owner of the local Bike
Connection.
He said this year the Dodge Tour
De Georgia has drawn many of the
top cyclists to Georgia because the
terrain here provides a good chance
to tune up for the Tour De France.
It is similar in the climbs, Lambert
said. Among the peaks riders will
cross in Georgia is Brasstown Bald.
“Some of the best cyclists in the
world will be here,” he said. “Some
people who have already had a
great season in Europe.”
In addition to Lance Armstrong,
who will be racing Sunday, Lam
bert suggested American Bobby
Julich as another rider to pull for.
According to the website tourde-
georgia. org, “Stage Seven begins
in the foothills of the Appalachians
in Dawsonville. The race continues
south, finishing with a blistering
four-mile circuit Grand Finale on
the streets of Alpharetta.”
It is scheduled to begin April
25 in Dawsonville at 1 p.m. and the
“expected finish” will be in
Alpharetta at 4 p.m. The distance
covered is 88.4-miles with a good
portion in Pickens.lt will pass
through Marble Hill, Tate, Nelson
and Ball Ground.
Lambert said when the riders
blaze through Pickens, most of the
120 riders will still be in “a pack.”
He said you may see five or six out
front and everyone else chasing
them.
Lambert said pro-riders usually
go about 28 miles an hour on flats,
34 mph when they are rushing and
40 mph on the sprints.
The Bike Connection will host a
ride to Ellijay to watch stage five of
the race as it passes through Ellijay
Friday. Anyone fit enough to make
the ride is welcome to join. Contact
the Bike Connection on Main
Street for details.

Argo to Chair Isakson's
Pickens Campaign
U.S. Congressman and Senate
Candidate Johnny Isakson is
pleased to announce Lurline Argo
as his Pickens County Campaign
Chairman. Lurline Argo was named
Republican of the Year by the
Republican National Committee in
2002.
As the chair of Isakson's grass
roots effort in the county, she will
coordinate volunteer activities and
events throughout the election.
Argo joins State Senator Casey
Cagle and State Representatives Jeff
Lewis and David Ralston who have
already announced their support for
the Republican Congressman's Sen
ate campaign and who will be serv
ing as Honorary co-chairs in Pick
ens County.
"Our goal is to win every county
in the July primary, and the key to
achieving it is putting a solid lead
ership structure in place in all 159
counties," said Isakson. "Having
Lurline on my team makes me
excited about the future and gives
me comfort in knowing our goals
will be reached. As the campaign
moves forward, we will continue
expanding our local team, and look
forward to making even more
announcements of support."
"I am delighted to be working on
Johnny's campaign," said Argo.
"He is the type of candidate who
has family values and gets things
done in Washington. I whole-heart
edly support him."
Argo's father was a political
activist and got her involved in poli
tics when she was in high school in
Fannin County. She became
involved again after she retired and
became increasingly concerned
about the direction of the country.
Argo will also be working the G-8
Conference this summer in Sea
Island.
In addition, she is a delegate to
the District and State Conventions
this year and is the County Chair for
her precinct. Lurline Argo resides in
Jasper and has one son who lives in
Ohio.
A successful businessman with
over two decades of service as a
Republican elected official, Isakson
currently serves on the influential
Transportation and Education com
mittees in the U.S. House of Repre
sentatives.
He has been married for 35
years, served in the Georgia Air
National Guard, and has taught
sixth grade Sunday School since
1978.
