PAGE 6A PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS THURSDAY. APRIL 22. 2004
Letters to
the Editor
Dear Editor:
This letter is in direct response
to a member of this community’s
warped view of reality. Usually
dedicated doctors are much too
busy to respond to such outlandish
tales because they are utilizing their
time in helping those who are truly
ill — but I felt compelled to write
back.
It is true that this town is in dire
need of good physicians. There are
already a handful, but the growth of
Pickens County demands more.
The duty of a physician is not only
to treat the patient as he sees fit, but
also to constantly be updating his
knowledge of various fields to
ensure maximal results. Relaying
this wisdom to our patients and
their families is essential. Another
critical responsibility of a physician
is to report any suspicions or actual
incidences of abuse — ranging from
physical to emotional and addictive
substances. Medical state laws have
changed vastly in the past five
years and all of these areas are
being given much more attention.
About a month ago I had a very
peculiar experience with a new
patient. After formal introductions,
she began telling me elaborate
details of her past medical history.
Then she abruptly stopped and
rudely commanded her well-
behaved daughter to “get out of the
room and sit on the floor outside.”
It was certainly irregular behavior,
but I gave the woman benefit of the
doubt due to her frustrations with
her health and wayward family.
The rest of the meeting went
smoothly. Never once did she men
tion having hypertension or arthri
tis... but, she did repeatedly men
tion the fact she was an ex-nurse
and needed specific regulated med
ications for her migraines. Nowa
days internists hesitate to prescribe
certain drugs because there are
either non-addictive alternatives or
a pain specialist would be more
certified to treat complicated disor
ders. But some patients don’t like
to hear this response. The patient
left the meeting with no com
plaints. After a few minutes I heard
a raucous in the waiting room area.
Apparently the women actually left
extremely disgruntled and began
targeting my courteous staff — but
worse than that, began verbally and
physically abusing her young
daughter in view of all who sat in
the waiting room that day. She
yanked her daughter into the car
and dangerously sped off onto the
road.
We felt it our obligation as a
medical staff and responsible citi
zens of this community to report
this abusive behavior. Others have
made similar complaints about this
woman. When one is in a notorious
light, it is not surprising that their
guilty conscience would try to
adulterate the truth of their emanci
pation. As this woman alleged to
three others being dissatisfied with
our service, that number pales in
comparison to the hundreds that
leave here impressed and thorough
ly satisfied.
Sincerely,
Dr. Monika S. Yadav, MD
Dear Editor:
I am a resident of the county and
a small business owner. I am writ
ing this letter in response to the
news story I saw the other day
about the sheriff’s department giv
ing a large sum of money to a
female deputy. A spokesperson for
the department stated, “It was a pri
vate employee matter.” This
response is unacceptable. Someone
in the department needs to step for
ward and elaborate on the details of
this transaction or the taxpayers
will assume the worst.

Dear Editor:
I love reading “Letters to the
Editor” each week. The peoples’
point of view on things are some
times different than mine. But here
recently a few people have written
about smoking in public places,
which is also on the news a lot.
Some things that people do with

public awareness of the county’s emergency personnel. At the invitation of I J. Irwin, South Pickens
Storage manager, the State Patrol, E.M.S., Tate Fire Dept., and Pickens Sheriff Dept, displayed units

their cigarettes is not appropriate,
but I believe a lot of people do a lot
of inappropriate things in life.
Specifically, I wrote this letter to
comment on those of you on “The
No Smoking, Second-Hand Smoke
Kills” bandwagon. Are ya’ll the
same people that promote all this
“progress?” Tearing down trees,
killing our oxygen/ozone? The big
machinery that cuts all our trees and
does progress puts off “air pollu
tion.” Are ya’ll the same ones that
gripe about smoking, but yet you
put all of your possible recycling
materials (plastic, paper, cans, etc.)
right in the trash? Which helps air
pollution, land waste, etc. Or are
you the same people that have an
SUV (Tahoe, Escalade, Durango,
etc.)? Bigger is better, air pollution?
Are ya’ll the people that move every
so often leaving a fine house to pro
mote tearing down trees and killing
yet more of our earth/ozone? Are
you the people that are on the “No
Smoking Bandwagon?” The ones I
see in town drinking alcohol with
your meal, then driving? Endanger
ing everybody’s lives? And even
better, do you have 500-1,000 min
utes on your cell phone and make
sure you use them up? While on our
roads, you talking that much on a
phone is putting our lives at stake.
To me there are many different
things in life that are life-threaten
ing. But someone having a cigarette
“outside” isn’t one of them. There
are many arguments for second
hand smoke kills. But there are a lot
of worse things too that we breathe
in life, if you stop and think about it.
Just because a person smokes does
n’t mean they’re nasty, trashy or any
less of a person than someone who
doesn’t.
Another quick fact is that we are
considered part of north metro
Atlanta. We have smog here now
which wasn’t here 10 or 50 years
ago. The smog that I breathe bothers
me so much more than someone
smoking around me.
Maybe you are a saint and do
everything to help our air and earth
that you can. And if so, this doesn’t
pertain to you.
