Thursday, May 6, 2004 will be
the 53rd Annual National Day of
Prayer. This years theme is Let
Freedom Ring. The theme scripture
for 2004 is Leviticus 25:10, “...pro
claim liberty throughout this land
and to all its inhabitants.”
The National Day of Prayer has
been an annual event, a time for our
nation to stop and pray for God’s
help in guiding our nation through
its path. There will be services
throughout the nation on this day,
including a prayer luncheon in
Washington attended by members
of Congress and the President. All
50 state governors have signed
proclamations honoring the Nation
al Day of Prayer as well as most
local officials. It is a time when
peoples of various faiths come
together and draw on our common
faith for our nation and her needs.
The Pickens County Ministerial
Association will be sponsoring a
prayer service May 6 at noon on the
front steps of the Pickens County
Courthouse. Participants from sev
eral local churches will be taking
part in the service. They will take
turns praying for our national gov
ernment and leaders, state and local
governments and leaders, our
troops, our schools and our fami
lies. The public is encouraged to
meet at the courthouse and take part
in this service.
On Thursday, May 6, in communities across America millions
will unite on their knees at noon for the 53rd Annual National Day
of Prayer to pray for our troops, our leaders and our nation.
PHS student wins Concerto Competition
James Land, a sophomore at
Pickens High School, is the winner
of the Atlanta Symphony Youth
Orchestra’s Concerto Competition.
Since 1974, the Atlanta Symphony
Youth Orchestra has provided the
cream of metro Atlanta’s young
instrumentalists an opportunity to
perform orchestral masterworks
under the city’s finest conductors.
Every September more than 400
instrumentalists of high school age
audition for places in the Atlanta
Symphony Youth Orchestra. Stan
dards are high, because only about
120 will be selected to participate.
Those chosen can look forward to
long hours of practice, both individ
ually and together, under the guid
ance of conductors and players from
the parent Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra. Part of each Saturday’s
rehearsal is devoted to coaching
sessions. This program has been
part of the ASYO experience since
the youth orchestra was founded
and thus far more than 50 ASO
players have served as ASYO
coaches.
At least one concert each season
features a soloist from the Youth
Orchestra, selected through a Con-

LAZY EYE
Another name for lazy eye is ambly
opia. Amblyopia is reduced vision in
an eye that is not correctable with
glasses or contact lenses.
The causes of amblyopia include:
Crossed eyes (strabismus) where the
eyes are not positioned straight
Dr. Leslie Whiting A difference in image quality (one eye
focusing better than the other)
Congenital cataract (a clouding of the lens of the eye found
in an infant)
Uncorrected high amounts of near-sightedness or far-sighted
ness
Severe ptosis (droopy eyelid)
In these cases, one eye becomes stronger than the other
eye. If this condition is not treated in early childhood, there
may be permanent impairment. That is the reason routine eye
exams in children are a must. School screenings are impor
tant, but they are not the same thing as a comprehensive eye
exam with a doctor.
Why does amblyopia develop? In a young child, the brain
ignores the image from the deviated eye and only sees the
image of the better eye. The blurred image is ignored or sup
pressed by the brain.
What is the treatment? Amblyopia sometimes can be
reversed if detected and treated at an early age. If it is left
untreated or not treated properly, the reduced vision becomes
permanent. The most effective way of treating amblyopia is
to encourage the child to use the amblyopic eye. Covering or
patching the good eye forces the child to use the weak eye.
Treatment may vary from a few hours to months or years. It
depends on the severity of the amblyopia and the cooperation
of the child.
